anyone change a 124 pitman arm seal in the car?

Looks like I need a new pitman arm seal. I read dpetryk's fabulous write-up. Seems like something I'll look forward to in retirement. For now, I just want to keep PS fluid off the control arm bushings :/

Is it possible to pry off the old seal without pulling the pitman arm shaft? If not, it looks like I can drop the pitman arm shaft without pulling the box. Has anyone done that?

cross-posted in tech forum

Thanks,
Sixto

Yes on my old 300D. Not a bad job.

Haven't tried it on a Mercedes

On American cars with power steering when that lower seal starts leaking I pull the Pitman arm or whatever other retaining device there is for the seal, start the car, and then bang the steering wheel to the full left or right limit once or twice. The pressure blows the seal right out. It helps to have someone (wearing safety glasses) watching from a safe distance to yell at you when the seal comes out and fluid starts gushing. If you can actually get in there to pry it out that would be a whole lot less messy.

I just did this on my 124.

not much more work to take the box out of the car and fix it for another 20 years.

If you do decide to take the box out, use deptryk's write up, but be ready for some slight differences.

especially the "valve cap" on the 123 cars it has a 14mm (or so) bolt head. Simply un-bolt and away you go. For the 124 he have the same valve cap. but it is held in place with 2 circlips. a little on on top, then a washer, then a bigger one. dont be like me and put it together wrong. and then put it back in the car, so that when you fill the system up with fluid the valve cap goes flying off. and all the fluid lands on the ground. . .

Looking at the write up again, doing just the pitman may be worth a try. My 124 is a 2nd car and can afford to be on the blocks for a few days (this job ended up taking weeks due to crazy work schedule).

best of luck. feel free to PM if you get stuck.

Brian
