Replacing rear turn lamps in 300TD

How do you get to the bulb for the rear turn signal on a 1984 300TD? I took out the spare tire thinking I would see the access to remove the bulb, but can't find anything like that.

How do you get to the bulb to change it?

You access the nuts that hold the lens to the car through the tire well. The passenger side is held by the two slotted nuts inside the hatch area.

The whole lens comes off with the wires leading to sockets that plug into the back of the lens.

So, you remove those two nuts and then pull on the lens from the outside?

Chad, I almost called you. It's funny that you were the first one to reply. I knew you'd know how it was done.

Ha! Yup, remove the nuts and pull the lens off from the outside. There is a strip of sockets that clip to the back of the lens. Be careful not to break the clip. It's delicate like the plastic pin on the console wood.

Glad to help.

One other thing I thought of. While I had mine off, I saturated the seal with 303 Aerospace Protectant to rehydrate it. My seals were very dry, but I got to them before they started crumbling.

If the seal goes bad the lens will fill up with water. Asking me how I know. I've dumped about a cup of water out of my lens in the past. I had to make some new seals.

Doh! That was easy.

I'll worry about the seals and stuff when it's not freezing cold outside. It was hard to see with my daughter holding the flashlight and shivering from the cold . . .

I've been thinking (wondering) of tapping into the brake light circuit and put a strip of leds (like the ones sold for trucks) across the top of the rear window. What to you think? Never had to get to the bulbs - now I know! Thanks!

That's exactly what I did. I was rear-ended in a snow storm on the interstate a while ago, and I figure its because there's not enough lighting back there.
I put an LED bar across the top of the rear window..it was around $20-30 on ebay. Something like this:

I dont think I have any pictures, I can take some and post them later.

This is on the agenda to do at some point on my TD. I've got an LED strip from a 129 I'm going to mount.

I read somewhere that messing with the brake lights can screw with the climate control. Any thoughts?

Sometimes, you can find it at Bap-Geon auto parts, I don't know if they have those in your part of the state. Otherwise, you've got to get it from an online vendor.
