It would help if you gave your location? You can add it by clicking on the user CP at the top of the page. A while back someone did a 500SEC diesel conversion. I believe it was in Virginia and there weren't any problems mentioned. Most states don't require emissions checks for diesels or older (classic) cars.

Since the car was originally registered as a gasser, requiring smog checks, Texas DMV may not be willing to change just because the car has a diesel engine in it now. However, most states have procedures that can be followed to register a one-off, which is essentially what you are creating. The trick is to find the DMV employee who will take the time to explain the paperwork procedure to you. My concern would be that some suspicious busybody would think you were doing this just to get out of the smog regs and were planning to swap a gasser engine back in as soon as you got the diesel registered. It would be worth a call to your local DMV just to see what the response is – let us know, please.

83 is exempt from any emissions. Anything older than 24 years old is only subject to the safety inspection only.

Are you going to do a OM617 or OM603? What happened to your 300CD and 190D?

Yep, safety inspection only in Texas. But don't be surprised if the inspection shop you take it to spend time scratching their heads and then calling their bosses.

cool, I want to do this too, I like the more modern look and comfort of the SEC, but I still want the diesel. I plan to go with the OM603 and a five speed from a w201

My subjects are many these days, driven projects are a 300d and the 190d . The 2 300cds have found their slumber in the garage for now ,they both HAVE GREAT COMPRESSION NUMBERS ,just waiting on misc small projects to neaten them up a bit.The idea is to keep the coupes ,drive one of them ,sale the other 2 drivers and start the diesel sec.I like coupes, can you tell.Reading up on other conversion converts ,they hunt for the 300sd for donors .

IIRC the SEC is based on the w126 platform. Easier to transfer parts that way.
