Need a 5.5mm Allen bit
I can't find a set of 1/4" or 3/8" drive allen bits anywhere, that has the much used on Mercedes 5.5mm bit. I'm tired of using my home-made one.
Anyone have such a set that they're happy with? Ball-end even? If so please post the brand. TIA

I know HF's got them but I just use a screwdriver bit tip. I picked up a set somewhere that had a bunch of various phillips, square and torx bits

Is that a 124 thing?
I've not had a need for a 5.5mm bit so far working on 123's and older 126's. Just being curious- what requires a 5.5mm allen bit?

Is 5.5mm used on the oil pan bolts, or just 5mm?

I have one also
Just have it in a set I bought from Sears a number of years ago. The other day I need one smaller then 1 mm for taking the face plate apart on the radio for my W124. So then I bought a set of super small allen wrench from Circuit City. The one I needed was .9mm and I think in the set are 2 allen's that are smaller then that. Darn near need a microscope when they get that small.

Excellent question!

I've not yet needed a 5.5 mm key for my 123, 124, and 210 cars – what is it used for? Jeremy

I'm also curious about the need for a 5.5. I've not run across that yet.
Just a general statement about these bits. I've broken (snapped) lots of Craftsman ones, but have yet to break a cheap one from Autozone or Advance Auto. The Craftsman bits must be harder steel (which should be better), but they are also more brittle. Would be interesting to hear about Snap-on, SK and other good brands. |

Removing the head there are a few, removing the turbo, removing many of the accessories and pieces around the 603 and 602 engine there are 5.5mm. Some of them require ball-ends like intake manifold or was it injection line brackets, ... difficult to use a cut-off allen wrench in a socket, keeps falling out even with a magnet insert.
Thanks all, I'm going to start with the Harbor Freight ball-end ones. Didn't have a set with 5.5mm here at Sears, nor did Autozoo or other local auto-parts stores, glad I asked.

I got a 603 apart and back together without a 5.5mm bit. Just last night I R&R'ed the crossover pipe. All 4 bolts take a 5mm bit. Maybe your 5mm bit is worn.

UNBELIEVABLE!!!
It's 5mm, I've been working with the 5mm in a 5.5mm holder all of this time, ... thanks Sixto for making me measure it. Off to get a normal set with legible markings. I feel so, ... well you guys can fill in the blank. I'm going to go hide in the Tech forum for a while.

I made one that doesn't fall out of the socket. I took a 1/2" long piece I cut off the shaft of a really long 5 mm allen key and used my vise to press it into a 3/16" 1/4 drive socket. I've got a butt-load of those laying around from various cheap tool sets I've bought over the years.
The 5mm is .1969" and 3/16 of an inch is .1875" so it is a tight fit, but since sockets are usually a few thousandths larger than their rated size, it press-fit in there very tightly...
