Transmission Rebuild

Hey Folks!

About to start on the transmission on my 83 300sd rebuild.

What are the key items to look for on the trans? I have not seen this trans operate yet, got it from a parts car with 77000 on the odometer.

The trans in my 84 300sd with 236000 miles shifts very jerky, especially when cold. I am afraid that it has too many miles on it and need to know I have a stable trans inplace that will not strand me anywhere.

I plan to replace it with the rebuilt 77000 mile trans.

I am not afraid to dig in deep, but I need to know if special tools are required.

Any help is appreciated.

Jim

You really really need to find a paper copy of the FSM on that transmission... and really really study it.

Did the replacement come from exactly the same model / year car ?

Model was 300sd. The target car is an 84. The rebuild came from a 83.
FSM is factory service manual?

FSM , yes.
You really need to do some research on the mating of two different origin items like that.. little things can ruin a project where stuff like shifting properly... or fuel mileage are important.... Sometimes things like the vacuum controls or linkages or ? can drive you crazy. And use up huge amounts of time and money.

Does anyone know of a source of FSMs for transmissions?

Are you sure it is not a vac issue on your current trans?
Lots of posts of new trans, same problem due to vacuum adjustments...
But what do I know, I am fighting mine right now also....

He could try some Trans-X according the instructions on the side of the can... check archives for some good reports on it... not expensive, no harm no foul if it does not fix the situation by dissolving built up varnish in the little holes in the valve body.

I am sure that the 236000 trans I have could be worked out. I plan on selling it after the switch.

What I am looking to do is learn how to rebuild the trans in more depth than changing the fluid and filter. At a minimum I would like to disassemble and inspect the internal components to make sure I can get 100000 miles out of it in the future. If it gets to a point that you need special tools, I would send it out.

This whole car is a project car. No rush. This is how I destress. And I like to do as much myself as possible. But I will admit I have never disassembled a auto trans.

Thats why I am looking for some insight here before I fowl the whole thing up.

Education is great.
First you need a support to be able to hold the trans vertical..... with a drip pan below it.
Will pm you about other stuff...

But in the meantime it sure would be fun to know that the Trans-X cured your jerky shift problems... LOL

A friend rebuilt my 77 300D trans. We got the rebuild kit from DACCO in Cookeville, TN, they also had a repair manual. Total kit including manual was around $270. It included front seals, reverse band, and the fwd bands. The tranny for the 77 is straight fwd. Don't know about the SD. Don't remember any special tools. Hope this helps,

I am in the middle (well, not the middle, but into) rebuilding one for my wife's 300D. I have one apart, and I have another parts transmission to pull apart yet. I have the gaskets and the clutches. Now I just need the b@lls.

Seriously, it's not that hard and I don't foresee any special tools. One of the hard bits is one of the pistons on one of the bands will take your eye out, but you can rig up something to catch the spring before it pops.

There are copies of the factory manuals out there for the taking ( I think RLeo's website has one). Get all you can . Get the ATSG manual ,too . Sounds like a nice winter project- probably rewarding. I rebuilt an old Ford C-4 and this doesn't look all that different.

Do you have a link to Rleo's web site?
