Oil cooler hose advice. - Car stranded in parking lot.

This is for a '83 300sd.

The PS belt cut a nice notch in my top oil cooler hose last night. Sprays oil all over the place, probably loosing a quart every couple minutes. I filled her up in the KMart parking lot and limped across the street to a chevy dealership. This morning their service guy didn't want to touch it.

I've seen a lot of varying opinions on the difficulty of repair.

Can I feasibly replace the top hose only in the parking lot?
Could a redneck fix of gasket material and hose clamps let me limp the 15 miles back home?

Thanks for any advice. I'm sure the dealership is going to get irritated if I leave it on the lot too long.

Greg:
It all depends on the exact situation but if it were me and I definitely needed to get it home, I'd do the gasket and hose clamps, drive slowly, check it every few miles, keep an eye on the oil pressure gauge and carry a couple of gallons of oil in the trunk.
I wouldn't try replacement in the parking lot.

GT,
You can definitely fix this in the parking lot. I have no doubt at all of this.
If your situation resembles mine at all a few months ago then I will just tell you what I did and it might help you out.

I simply cut off the section of the hose that was messed up and took it to my local hose fabricator/supplier in Knoxville (Royal Brass and Hose) and I told them what I needed and that I did not want to take off the metal sections of pipe from the car.

They fabricated threaded fittings and rubber hoses together that fixed my problem.

Being that I do not know your exact situation I cannot help you to much into the details. This should be of some assistance though.

Im guessing no AAA? Id say its worth the $50-$75 to have it towed home. see if the dealer can help you out finding a cheap local. if you rig it and it fials, you will pump all of your oil out in a matter of seconds.

You could splice the line using a brass or aluminum insert and screw hose clamps. And then drive slow and check the line. Keep an eye on the guage, as like Lutz said, the oil pumps out in a matter of seconds.

Look what happened to Rashakor...

I think another thing to consider is that your PS belt won't touch the oil cooler hose unless there's another problem, like a collapsed driver side motor mount.

I'd have the car towed home and repair it there. Luckily you need to remove the motor mount and jack up the motor to get the old oil cooler line out anyway so you could just replace it.

first cut off your power steering belt.
next get a piece of 3/8" pipe from a hardware store, and a pair of 1" hose clamps. better yet, two pair of clamps.
cut the hose near the break, insert the pipe, and the clamps, crank down the clamps as tight as you can and see if it leaks.
if you fix this, get your motor mounts replaced. they sagged and let the ps belt contact your hose.

Inspect your motor mounts. Worn mounts allow the engine to flop down and cut the oil lines with the belt(as you found out)

Couldn't inspect the motor mount too well in the dark. Crazy thing is, I replaced the mount 3 months ago. Wonder if there was a bad batch of aftermarket parts?

I'm leaning towards the gasket approach. It's a small V shaped notch. I can probably fit a section of O-Ring in the notch and clamp a piece of flat gasket on top of that. Time to ask a favor from the maintenance supervisor.....

If it was me I would go Online; join the AAA and get the free tow home the same day.

I cut the crimped collars of my original Oil Cooler hoses and replaced it with some Good Year Hose suited for the job. However, the barbs on the Oil Cooler Hose fittings are larger than 1/2 inch and smaller than 5/8 making it a sloppy fit so I used 2 hose clamps on each hose end.

Also, the first hose (the 1/2 inch) I ordered was too tight and I put on and drove the car for 2 weeks with a piece of heater hose (the red heavy duty type) until the 5/8 hose arrived and I put that on and it has been OK for at lest 1 year now.

So as a temp you could substitute Heater Hose.
I have been trying to post some pics but my internet is not functioning well.
Other possibilities are to cut the hose and plug them and put hose clamps on.

Cut the hose shove in a length of pipe and double clamp each end.

Viton gasket and 4 hose clamps are in place. Only needed two quarts to top it off after moving it from the KMart. It was well after dark by the time I got the clamps on. Tomorrow I will try to drive it home with someone following me.

The arm that sets in the middle of the motor mount is almost level with the allen screws. How the crap does a mount collapse in three months?!

Have it towed home and fix it, you can't fix it in a parking lot. If it was my lot I'd have it towed if it was leaking oil all over the place, diesel oil makes a freaken mess!

Your going to need two cooler hoses, and a set of engine mounts. Might as well do the trans mount while your at it. Start spraying the oil cooler connections with PB blaster now so they come apart.

I would first fill the hole with RTV (but not push it into the hole, as this would let gasket maker into our oil line, possibly clogging something important). Then i would get a piece of radiator hose, split in half ( so its no longer a tube, but a flat square piece of rubber) and then place it around the existing hose, covering the hole. I would then hold it on tight with three hose clamps, one directly over the hole you sealed with rtv. Keep your rpm's low, watch the gauge and level, and replace that hose with a top quality replacement. NEVER consider ANY other option than replacing the line with an OEM line. And do the motor mount (which is great, becuase removing the mount makes installing the new line much much easier). Just dont cross thread your engine mount arm, the arm is aluminum and your bolt is steel.
