'06 CDI water pump failure

Hey guys, my dad called and said the water pump failed in his '06 E320 CDI. It's got just under 100,000 miles on it I believe. Sounds like the seal failed then the bearings, the pump locked up and threw the belt.

Anyone heard of this happening? Like is it common or a random mechanical failure? Also, how bit of a pain is it to replace?

Hi Brian,

I can't offer much help but I can say that I haven't seen anyone else post this type of problem on the CDI cars. I'm assuming it's out of warranty because of the mileage..?

100k on a 2 year old car?! wow....

I'd just replace the pump, probably a random mechanical failure.

Waterpumps were not built for high mileage. 100k miles is good. The longest I have ever had one last was 60,000 miles.

Don't tell my '99 that; its WP is at 252k currently.

They are sensitive to fan vibration....we bent the fan blade installing the new motor into my dad's 300SD, and the vibration from the fan caused the pump to start leaking from the bearing seals after about 20 minutes of running! Replaced the fan blade and pump and 0 issues since.

Thanks for the input guys! I'll pass the info along. Sure seems like a fluke thing to me. Like Evan, I didn't see any reports of failures on CDIs on the board here.

Yeah, he puts a lot of miles on his cars. Almost all highway miles though, and he maintains his cars very well.

Nor my '99 with 116K. Alternator fine too.

How about alternator mileage replacement, TMAllison? My 300SD would do about 130K per alternator.

My 300SD needed it's 1st WP replacement in the 150K+ range, the 2nd replacement in the 250K+ range.
Sold it at 305K, just when I was getting good at replacing them.
I was getting good at alternator removal & replacement on the 300SD too.

Your 99 and its issues as a garage queen are an anomally IMO.

In its life, other than wear items (brakes/rotors, some bushings, leaky orings, etc), mine has received the following: K40 relay, SOV, one set of GP's, acc belt tensioner, oil level sending unit, one window regulator, and a blower motor regulator.

Everything else on the car is OE.

Has never leaked nor dripped a drop of oil.

*edit* forgot to add one MAF replaced.
