Junkyard finds that tick you off! @#%&&!!

I like going to the boneyards... It's like a walk in the park for me. Get a little air. Get some exercise. Check out the cars. See what I can find….

As far as Mercedes engines are concerned I always see the ubiquitous M102, M103, M104, M110, M116, M117, OM616, OM617, and the occasional om615. But I have never seen a OM603 in my local yards. It sort of become my not so serious search for the Holy Grail of the junkyards.

Until today. I found a OM603.960 in a 1987 300D.

And I was pissed for finding it!

I hate people who does this to perfectly good motors. They should of taken the whole thing instead of letting it rot.
(I apologize for the images they came off my phone.)

All the cylinders have virtually no sign of wear at all. No cylinder ridges. But it has been raining here and rust has moved in. I can get this short block for cheap. But it might not be worth it for the shape it is right now. Sigh

I've got to throw my week's experience in the ring:

I've been looking for two years for a good late-124 dash in black. I visit the local (within 2hours' round trip) 2 yards almost weekly, just looking for one, it's been a quest.

Tuesday I found one, car not processed yet, was to go in the yard Wednesday. I loaded my tools Thursday morning, made the 1hour trip to the yard to remove the dash I had inspected Tuesday, ... someone has TRASHED the dash, IP, ACC, door panel, console, ... disgusted I drove back home. That had no purpose, nothing, just destruction. I don't get it. Back to waiting again I guess.

yea, it happens and it pisses us all off.

When I found the eagle premier in the junkyard two months ago I was afraid someone else would find the engine or do something to it. Two months later I go back and find the car in the same spot untouched with the motor unmolested. Sometimes you get lucky and sometimes you dont.

Sorry. That sux. Well that tops my story! And I don't even need a motor, I just wanted one to so my 617 in the shed would have a companion.

I don`t know why people do that. why do they take off the oil fill cap, and leave it off? the the cam shaft lobes get rusty.

saw a real nice 90 300TE at the Moss Landing PNP. almost perfect shape, but is being stripped.

there is an 85 300D, 272000 miles. maybe some one looking for a 2:88 diff.

most people get what they want and the heck with everyone else.

I met a forum member there today, MBEHENSKY.

we need some MB Shop overalls, or MB Patches to ID EA other .

As a junk yard hound I see it all... but remember it is a JUNKYARD. It's haunted by junk finders. When you enter it's all fair game- this is a known.

Last time I went to the local yard, there was a 91 560SEL with MINT interior and burlwood trim (super rare to find in good shape). Whoever was there before me tried to remove the trim below the cluster, and ended up just cracking the hell out of it, and left it partially hanging. UGH it made me so mad...what a waste.

I hate this too. I was looking for a dash and climate controls for my BMW. I finally found a 1985 e28 in the yard, but somebody trashed the dash and cluster to get the radio and the trip computer.

I think it is a matter of how much time you want to spend in the yard. When I take parts like the power window motors I needed, I spent the time geting the door panels off the correct way and used my time as a dry run on what I would be doing to my car. Most people would just crowbar the door panel off to save time. I also always shut the hood and doors of any car I am working on. You never know what else you will need an I want the interiors esp. to stay dry. I hate people who open the doors and just leave them open.

Guys....I hear you. The worse one for me are the "picture perfect" back seats.....that someone tries to pry out. What about the vacuum locked trunks --- guys trying to open them with crowbars....just to see what's in the trunk.

I actually stopped another mercedes guy from using a crowbar one day and taught him how to blow\suck on the vacuum lines. Of course, he had to do the blowing and sucking. And, I got first dibbs on what was in the trunk. I didn't want the Mercedes car cover --- let him have it....since he didn't have a garage.....I even helped him remove the CD deck from the trunk. I'm more of "stock" kind of guy and wanted an iPod hookup.

Regarding value --- he probably was higher on what he got from the trunk; but I got the tool kit, a brand new Harbor Freight "misc connectors" set, and some other stuff. He got the car cover and the CD player.

There are stupid people that will do stupid things for no reason (other than being stupid)
And for this reason You don't go to the junk Yard without tools, if there is something You need You jump on it right away. Tomorrow it will be either gone or destroyed...

Yeah, like the day I saw a guy walking around ripping black leather out of everything. He must have been going to do some sewing.

Yeah I know it's all fair game. But you just can't help being ticked off on something you have in your sights only to have it slip away. Of couse all this could be prevented if you could time travel.

You should see the damage done to the cars here in northern ill, It's unreal. And, as you stroll thru (was there yesterday, looking for F250 headliner, no luck) you are approched
multiple times by guys wanting to borrow tools--of course, they only speak spanish, and if you hear laughing and see the source, it's those same guys trashing a car just for fun...but if caught, they do get ejected. I've seen that happen. The benz and bmw emblems last about 1 second up here...when pulling into the joint, behind me was some joker, driving some japanese sedan..and he had an audi grill emblem ziptied to his grill.
Can you say 'immigration reform'? I was the only WASP at the place, and i can't help but close the doors and hoods of those i walk past.
Last year I remember working inside of a van, and someone slammed the sliding door closed on me! I saw red, and got out to yell at the person, but, not to sound racist, it was a white guy, and I realized he was doing what I do, just did not see me...I thought it was the vandalizing young mexicans! I will say that the older ones don't beat up the place, they are family guys, struggling..but they should bring their sons inside and teach them some respect!

I see that in all races. One example, few months ago I was rushing to get to the car I've seen the day before. Five early 20's Caucasian boys were swing tire arms into the windshields of almost every car they walked by. I turned around and had them kicked out. Lack of respect happens - might be generational thing.
