1983 240D engine seized. Sell? Part out? Fix?

Brand new to this forum and I need some advice from all you MB lovers out there.

Driving on the interstate (probably too fast, something I will always regret now) and the engine starts clicking more than normal. I slow down, it gets progressively louder over the next 10 miles to the point where I feel like I'm going to see a piston shoot through the hood. Oil pressure fluctuating, temperature still normal, progressively losing power...I decide to pull over. I take my foot off the accelerator and the engine quickly dies while I coast to a stop. I didn't even try to restart it, I just called my towing service and now the car is sitting in my driveway, future uncertain.

Anyone had a similar experience? Engine has 235,xxx miles on it, rebuilt at around 200,000 miles. New oil pump, new vacuum pump, oil changed regularly, does not burn oil...has been very reliable up until this point. I'm handy with cars and I'm interested in rebuilding the engine...but I understand that is usually more pricey than just finding one at a junkyard.

Should I sell it for parts get what I can and move on? Fix it? What kind of money am I looking at?

'preciate any advice.

atleast check under the valve cover to see what you can see.. pull the injectors and bar the engine over to feel for problems..

I would make sure the engine was dead before parting it out..

I would diagnose before you sell, part out or fix. Roll the engine over w/ a 1 -1/16 wrench on the ps pulley clockwise i think, check to be sure. If you don't find an interference, check the fluids & try starting again.

If say worst case, you broke a valve and shredded a piston and the head, so you need, piston set, rings & head and your body is good & solid, then I would look around for an engine from a deerhunter or similar totalled vehicle.

What took you so long to pull over??? It IS a Mercedes but it isn't bullet proof

Fluctuating oil pressure is an immediate red flag. These cars have a mechanical oil pressure guage so there is nothing good that can be happening when it fluctuates.

The decision of what to do depends completely on what is wrong with the motor and the overall condition of the car. Tell us more and we can offer thoughts.

Sorry its not going well at the moment for you.

depends on the condition of the rest of the car. it may cost more to fix than to replace with another 240. some pics will help us see if the car is worth the effort.

if the car is a beater, get another car. no sense speeding $$$ on a $500 beater.

If she's a nice ride, fix her up.

Are oil cooler lines, extending next to radiator, still in place? These are known to cause engine failure if ruptured.

Post Checks & Blances

As mentioned , you must decide based on the car's overall condition ~ it's all one color with no rust and working AC ? (rare in Fla.) then go buy a cheap used engine from a wreck as they're all over the place and should be under $80.00 installed if you can find an honest Mercedes mechanic ~ don't let the corner " do all " guy touch it .
