What's a good, realistic price?
 

Hey all, I have decided to sell my 83 240D. I'm pretty sure I might get a DeLorean this week WOOOOO :D:D:D and it might need work, the 240 needs work and I can't have two cars that need work. So i'm getting an 85 300 Turbo Diesel to replace the 240. This 300D is in great condition with 141,000 original miles whole new suspension and only needs front brakes.

My question is: How much should I ask for the 240? It's black, tinted windows, automatic, has about 305,000 miles, new tires, new injectors, got a valve adjustment about a few weeks ago, new vacuum pump/ vacuum lines, new key tumbler, after market radio with CD player, transmission was adjusted to shift late so it's quicker, the part with the hand pump is new, had the serpentine belt tightened and the interior is in great condition with the only tear being on the drivers seat.

It needs a new head gasket, the rear passenger shock absorber is loose, has some play in the steering wheel, the door locks don't work (vacuum leak) and the drivers door lock gave out, so to unlock the car it has to be through the passenger door. It needs new rear axles and the brake master cylinder is leaking brake fluid.

What do you guys think? I was thinking 2,500? maybe 3,000? :o I'm just so excited to get the DeLorean, that I want to get this thing out of here, I will miss her though :(

Needing a head gasket, shock-repair, failed door lock, master cylinder, and rear CV axles, its worth $700-800 at most. Thats a LOT of major repairs! You can pick up a lower miles 240d without any of those issues for $2500 or less.....

Its probably worth a grand to someone if the body and interior are nice.

I got my 240D from the original owner, 4-speed, and with fewer miles and problems for $2500 a year ago.

I doubt they have appreciated that much since then ;)

Can't you at least tighten the shock absorber? Or do you mean loose as in it is spent (no gas left in it)?

The exterior is in excellent condition, it was repainted black back in 2005 and being in a family with a detailer it's been kept up very well. Yes I do plan on getting the shock tightend and I was planning on fixing the axles, my mechanic said 90$ for each axle and he'd install them free. I would like to fix the door locks soon also if I don't get any bites right away. I always thought even 305,000 miles wasn't thaaaat much for a w123 Diesel... or are we just blowing smoke when we say they can go a million miles? :rolleyes: If anything, the head gasket is something for the next owner, I'd rather spend that money on the DeLorean :D. We parked it at a family-friends restraunt and I drove it home a few hours ago, for what it does have wrong with it, it's a damn good car.

It's so smooth, quiet and like I said runs damn good for 305,000 miles. I was just cruising it back home. It's an awesome car and has never left me stranded. It also gets awesome mileage compared to the 300D turbo... Most of us know this already though :P

The 123 may go a million miles, the engine won`t. It will after a few rebuilds, but the majority won`t see 400,000. maybe on the extreem end.

these engines only go 1 million miles and get 40 + mpg on e-bay.

In reality, you have an old car with some issues. the head gasket being one. what do we find once the head is removed? 300,000 miles is a lot of miles.

with the economy in the tank, it might be wise to not get too far out on the limb with too many money pits. But then you are young;).

I cannot stress enough that driving a delorean as a daily driver with no backup is not a great plan.I know these things very well

also, Don't buy the first one you see(delorean).... seriously its not a dependable daily driver or even practical. You cant even fit a gallon of milk standing up in the luggage compartment. If you have a rear tire blow out on you you cant even put it in said luggage compartment, its either leave it or your passenger on the side of the road(if you dont have the "luggage rack")


There are at least 2 other delorean owners on this forum, a third wouldn't hurt.

Black is the only color that looks good on these cars

Adjusting the serpentine belt on a 240d is a very difficult operation so that should add significantly to its value.

All the listed repairs add up to more than the value of the car when finished. Anything you get for it over $500 bucks would be doing well.
So, what "rain adventures" are you not disclosing. Might make the $500 thing a bit high.......;)
BTW, I can't imagine having a DeLorean that isn't stainless!!

$500-$1k for a clean 300k mile 240 that needs major engine work.

Yes! I don't know if you read my post up top, but this is the reason i'm selling my 240D that needs some work to intern get a 300D Turbo that needs nothing but front brakes! I know I can't have two cars that need work and I need one reliable car I can count on hence this awesome 300D.

I have been looking around and this isn't my first Delorean i'm looking at. I am looking at this black one, yes, but If i'm lucky enough to get it, that paint is coming off in a few months after I would own it. Even with some of the "imperfections" of the DMC-12 that you stated I will still take it most places because I absolutely love that car, and would sell the Mercedes to get it, which is what i'm doing.

I heard about this trouble with the gallon of milk on the DMC forums and can't you just put it behind the seats? I imagine the car can't be that bad, taking it to the store if you're going by yourself. You would have the whole passenger side, the "storage net" space behind you and then the hood which i'm sure can fit a few bags that don't have milk in them lol :P I was actually surpsied when I saw your name as the last post on this thread, and was like "thedon? :confused:" LOL Hopefully there will be four owners on this forum soon :D

It's leaking a little coolant out the back of the head :( Every few weeks I have to put some coolant in.

With the car yes, every chance I get I drive out in the rain because we get so little of it here. When it snowed I took it out in the snow and had fun with it. However, after every fun little session I have had I always, always wash the underbelly with water and if I think necessary, degreaser.

That night when I got back from my snowy adventure, it was 8:30 at night, about 45oF light drizzle and I put the car in our RV parking, rinsed the entire car and under body, put it in the garage and used a chamois to dry off the entire car. Next morning it was like it never happened :)
