What would you do with this car?

It's a 1980 300TD and it has a good engine and rust free chassis. The bad: it has one of those servo's that has a bad reputation for always having something go wrong with it! Now, if you had a 1982 parts car with a complete climate control system in it including a monovalve, would you swap out the entire system? Parts car is a 1982 300D.

My pushbutton Programma climate control unit, the older style is missing from the 1980, but I have a complete system from the 1982 including the Programa. Would this swap make the value go down if I decided to sell it or do you think it would be worth the same or more with the dependable system in it?

Questions, questions.........................................

Decisions, Decisions..........................................

If the other one from the other car is working then go ahead and swap it out.

The system from the 1982 is working. It's the car that is the rust bucket not really worth fixing! You can see the ground right through the floor!

Has anyone tried this swap with the older Benz's?

if you were smart you would get a 240D or a euro car and put the manual climate control in.

the automatic climate control is another flaw of mercedes.

Dont see why you cant do it, a lot of work though

A manual system would be my first choice, but parts I would have to buy! My 1983 300D's and TD's with the newer automatic system have not given me any problems in years with the exception of a Programma that decided to spit out it's parts onto the passenger side seat at 116*F! But that was easily fixable in one afternoon and this system is one I already own. That has a lot of influence too.

The 1980 300TD is also a wagon, which will fetch a decent amount of dough for an Arizona Rust free chassis car even if it needs the new climate control system. The front seats are out and the center console is in the back, so it's mostly taken apart already.

Well, I guess I'll find out how hard this is going to be when I strip my 1982 parts car before sending it off into car heaven! Everything is coming off and out!

Well, the servo is supposed to be working, but the climate control pushbutton unit is missing and a replacement is $765.00! Or I could try one from a wrecking yard, but if the old Chrysler system is kinda problematic, then why not upgrade?

These are parts I already have.

Yeah, and when this turns out to be successful, then I'll have a good servo available for those who need it.

There is supposed to be a new digital system out for the older Benz's that solves a lot of these problems, but I've yet to hear from anyone who has tried it!

I think that if you were to tackle a project like this and make it work, it might as well be with a wagon since these hold their value well!

I would imagine swapping the wiring harness would be a beeotch.

Its a lot of work. I don't know about the wiring harness issues. I wouldn't be surprised if all that simply unplugs and plugs back in.

And if you are saying you are going to swap the older chrysler climate control for the later version, I would not. It is considered problematic.

The under dash stuff is not all of it. the piping under the hood is different too and the position of the ac compressor may be different as well. Sounds like something you want to consider carefully before embarking on it.

I would fix whatever is wrong with the system in the car you want to drive rather than swap it.
