Bigger Turbo on a 300TD
I have my Unimog running on a OM617A 300 TD and boosted 15PSI . I was wondering if it is possable to upgrade the turbo on that motor? I have been told that a cummins turbo might fit?

There would be a lot of throttle lag too for rock crawling.

I can't imagine how the 617 fits in the 'mog... Either it's really leaning over or there's a big bulge in the left doghouse cover where the injection pump lives... :eek: I agree on the VGT. It'll help with the torque down low, though, as low as 1st is on that truck, I can't imagine any power problems especially since the 617 is already more powerfull than the M180. Are you running the stock tranny? |

You need to install an injection pump that can flow more fuel before considering a turbo that can flow more air. A bigger turbo without matching increase in fuel delivery would make your 'mog slower and perform worse.
I third the VNT turbo. A GT2256V from a Sprinter will make a world of difference in performance. The GT2359V from an E320 CDI will flow enough air for over 200hp. |

There is a turbo on the engine I have in my Mog. It is small but it is there..Sounds like OM617-95X fits the bill. I was told it was out of a consulate car the took diplomates from DIA to where ever they needed to go in Denver.
Now back to a VGT. Is that something I could find used/rebuilt? Or would is it better to find a new one? Possable out of a Sprinter as suggested earlier. Any sources better than others Also, with the motor already turned up 15psi, what would I gain from adding VGT? I have an intercooler to add too that hopefully will help on the mileage. Thanks again for all your help. |
