Bigger Turbo on a 300TD

I have my Unimog running on a OM617A 300 TD and boosted 15PSI . I was wondering if it is possable to upgrade the turbo on that motor? I have been told that a cummins turbo might fit?

Thanks for the help.

Does you no good with the IP delivering the same amount of fuel.......;)

There would be a lot of throttle lag too for rock crawling.

I would (and have) upgrade to a VGT. Check out the diesel performace section and www.superturbodiesel.com

Welcome to the forum, good to see another 'mogger here!

I can't imagine how the 617 fits in the 'mog... Either it's really leaning over or there's a big bulge in the left doghouse cover where the injection pump lives...

I agree on the VGT. It'll help with the torque down low, though, as low as 1st is on that truck, I can't imagine any power problems especially since the 617 is already more powerfull than the M180.

Are you running the stock tranny?

Your engine is not a 617A 300 TD. It's a 617-95(X). 300 is a model listed on different chassis. TD means touring diesel, ie station wagon. It does NOT mean turbo diesel in the mercedes world. You'll need more fuel to get any more power, period. Check out the performance section for non stock modifications to increase HP.

You need to install an injection pump that can flow more fuel before considering a turbo that can flow more air. A bigger turbo without matching increase in fuel delivery would make your 'mog slower and perform worse.

I third the VNT turbo. A GT2256V from a Sprinter will make a world of difference in performance. The GT2359V from an E320 CDI will flow enough air for over 200hp.

The 617 fits no problem. Im not sure the details but it has pleanty of room. No mods to the doghouse.

The drivetrain is all stock 404. Can you explain more about the VGT? I just am looking for more power in the higher end. Low is definatly low enough, maybe just a little more punch at the upper gears. Do you think the tranny could handle 200hp? A Mog with 200HP would be pretty sweet...

Not that I don't believe you, but how do you know that about my motor? Thanks for the tip on the mods to increase HP.

Mercedes diesels are listed by number following "OM" which denotes "oil motor" OM 617 comes in various versions- and those versions are denoted by three numbers. All 617's are called 617-9XX. 617-912 is a NA version, 617-95X is a turbo version. There are various sub-versions that are denoted by different numbers. The four cylinder version of the 61X is 616. It also has various versions. The germans are quite precise- myself not so- so i guessed. 617A 300-TD is not a mercedes engine designation- but the 300TD has a 617 in it. So does the Mog. You are a newbie that seems to be just starting to ask about the engine so I guessed you used incorrect nomenclature. Others here will post the facts and figures pdf's that will corroborate this.

Some good info. Thanks. Not sure I stated this, but this is not the original engine. It came out of a early 80's sedan. So is MB definition of touring diesel basically the same meaning of other TD definitions or is there a MB Turbo Diesel too?

It the MB world, TD always means touring diesel, which is a wagon. Some people use DT for the sedan and TDT for the wagon, but if you do that, you will soon incur the wrath of Jimmy.

In the pre 1990's "D" means sedan diesel, "CD" means coupe diesel, "SD" means big body sedan diesel, "TD" means touring diesel- ie wagon, "GD" means G-wagon. Your engine came out of a "SD" if it was out of a 80-81 sedan, as the "SD" had a turbo (OM617-95X) from 78-85 in two different chassis (w116 and w126). Sedans in the smaller chassis (w123) did not get a turbo engine until 1982.

I am monitoring this situation from afar........

Commissioner Gordon will turn on the TDT spotlight should my intervention become necessary. :batman:
{Chad, there's an idea} :o:o

There is a turbo on the engine I have in my Mog. It is small but it is there..Sounds like OM617-95X fits the bill. I was told it was out of a consulate car the took diplomates from DIA to where ever they needed to go in Denver.

Now back to a VGT. Is that something I could find used/rebuilt? Or would is it better to find a new one? Possable out of a Sprinter as suggested earlier. Any sources better than others

Also, with the motor already turned up 15psi, what would I gain from adding VGT? I have an intercooler to add too that hopefully will help on the mileage.

Thanks again for all your help.
