Anybody on roadtrips? How's that going?
I just got to my wife's (Shreveport, LA) from San Angelo, TX. It was about 475 mi, and would have made it on 1 tank! I just finished fixing the motor mounts yesterday, and this is the first time I've been able to check out fuel economy with the 2.47 rear diff.
Did the math at fill up and it was right at 35 mpg, at 70 mph. If I didn't go the wrong way several times on the back roads and there weren't thousands of idiots cutting me off on the freeway. I would have been able to stay on the cruise control longer and pulled a little better mileage. The car stood up like a champ...almost hard to believe I only paid $2k for it. Smooth as the day is long, after some rebuilding.

I have to run up to northern Virginia on Friday to pick up some Diesel parts. Should be an 8 hour round trip. First long miles since I did all the work on the car over the past few months.

Down in Corpus Cristi on the Texas coast on our sailboat, we drove down about 450 miles from home on Eagle Mountain Lake, just NW of Fort Worth. So, I should say, Feliz Navidad y Feliz Año Nuevo, it's Christmas Eve and a balmy 75 degrees - doesn't feel very Christmasy.

Heading to Steamboat Springs tomorrow but not in one of the Benzes. Snow predicted and two high passes so we'll be taking the 4wd Suzuki Sidekick.
We drove down to Corpus Christi for Xmas about ten years ago and it was cold down there. We were camping in the motorhome in a state park. There's an article in the most recent Small Craft Advisor about a group of boats sailing from somewhere down Brownsville way up to Corpus Christi. Sounded like an interesting trip.

Leaving for Philadelphia Friday early AM about 3. Long trip 855 miles, but matilda stood up very well on our last trip to Niagara Falls - Philadelphia - Raleigh - back home to Clarksville TN.
I was just thinking that I should change the fuel filter before I leave and what do you know, she started faltering on the way home from xmas eve dinner at our daughters house tonight. Its like we are one in mind. |

Did a 2,000+ mile round trip from Alabama to Rio Grand Valley Texas at Thanksgiving. The destination for that trip was MERCEDES, TEXAS! But will do a much shorter Birmingham to Nashville to Chattanooga to Birmingham for Xmas. Blocked EGR on '87 300SDL since Thanksgiving trip so hoping to see an improved MPG. Does seem to have more pep, but may be my imagination.
Used http://autos.msn.com to find the cheapest diesel stations along the route. You can drag the map along your route. A lot of variation in price from town to town. Joe

We made it from our home in California, across the Sierra and Nevada to Salt Lake City without having to install our chains, a major victory. Snow first appeared alongside the road at about 3000 feet elevation and was our constant companion for the rest of the trip. As predicted, traffic was lighter than normal but there was enough of it to keep at least one lane of the freeway clear if not dry.
People seem to have learned a little from the high prices of this past summer and many were driving a bit slower. Gasoline was selling for around $1.50/gallon with diesel at $2.20. Getting back to California next week may be problematic given the storms predicted for the next few days. We shall see. Jeremy

500 miles down to Maryland, then 300 to Rochester, then 220 to the northcountry, then 220 back to Rochester. Who wants to get that the Benz will make it? Or should I liberate my Brother's 1995 Buick?

Possibly go to my grandma's place in Ridgecrest, CA, from Anaheim this weekend. Not too bad of a drive but the difference in temperatures will test the car. It's snowing at 21F there they said, and my car's battery is 8 years old
Time to get some of that white Diesel Kleen stuff to be safe!

Gonna make a round trip from here (north Texas) to Michigan. About 2600 miles. I was planning to take the 300D, but looks like it has developed a wheel bearing problem. The 240D is not prepped for that kind of trip, so I guess we will take the Prius. The 300D would have been more comfy, but the Prius has a sound system from the current century, so I guess it all works out.

I drove about 180 miles over the past couple days in my 300SD for family gatherings(and rolled past 277k on the way).....tonight we took the 300E on a local trip to more family stuff....about 10 miles. However, Sunday we'll be going back out to Lansing MI again.....so probably another 165-170 miles....this time in the 300E. Balancin' out the miles.....
Its cheaper to drive the 300E currently.....$2 less per round trip! Oh well....its more comfortable.

All The Time !
But of course these cars were made for road trips
We'll be hitting the road next week for a few thousand miles in SWMBO's 240D as my 300CD's heater core has a pinhole and is steaming up the windows.. We've done this trip in her old '82 before , it's enjoyable if slow . Besides ; her heater works better !

I will be heading home (Knoxville, TN) from Montgomery, AL tomorrow morning. Everything went well and I only lost about a 1/4 of a quart of oil. That is a lot better than the last time I had the oil waterfall coming due to the fact that I had a broken motor mount that had collapsed and cracked a hole in the oil cooler line. Yikes!! I had nightmares for a month from that trip.

If you have any opening in your half shaft boots I would advise against any long road trips ,I made such a trip last year up to Dallas with a torn boot and had to limp all the way home. The rear shaft Thumps like you have a flat tire, some people driving passed you will give you that advice at least.
