Heat Shield Direction

2 Attachment(s)
Ok...I can't seem to find a definitive answer to which direction the heat shield should go in on the 617's injectors. I went to a pick and pull this morning and found several different 617 engines with several different heat shields. Some had the concave side pointing up...some had it down...

so...which side should go towards the injector....

Picture #1 (left) or Picture #2 (right)

Thanks!

If the drawings in the 617.95 engine manual are accurate, the side depicted in Photo #1 should face the injector.

picture #1, if you put it the other way round you may end up having leaks at the base of the injector......

Also, if you drop them in they want to flip over. Slide them on a Phillips Screwdriver and stick it into the hole and let it guide the Heat Shield down.
Afterwhich get a Flashlight and take a look down the hole to make sure they are positioned correctly.

the concave side goes against the injector. if you hold it up to the tip of the nozzle you can see how it seals. keep a flashlight handy so that after you drop them in you can verify that they are right side up. Did you replace your injector nozzles?

The flat side goes against the injector. Look at the prechamber, they sit in them, you should be able to tell.

Apparently, the OP's well thought out plan to avoid descriptive ambiguity has fallen short of expectations!!!

tango.. and Actros... have it correct.

It's a one use item as the small ring inside the inner circle will be CRUSHED. The concave side has nothing to crush. Sometimes they are referred to as a crush washer.

BioDieseLandon 12-27-2008 08:32 PM

i meant concave as in the flat side that has the concave grove around it.

Look at the FSM. Its a freaken crush washer, it only goes one way. Picture number 1 the flat side goes against the injector. Look at the prechamber and how it sits.

They are also one time use, and you do need a torque wrench to properly tighten the injectors. Off the top of my head its 80 ft pounds on the 603, but its been a year since I removed the injectors so double check. The 617 is probably about the same.

Picture 1 is correct.

WINGAS 12-28-2008 08:55 AM

If you actually put them up against the injector toe, it will be obvious that #1 is correct.
