350 SDL Old Engine Replacement
I am looking at buying a '91 350SDL with 242,000 miles. The engine was replaced due to rod bending in 2002 at 170,000 miles with a new engine block that had specific number 6030100650. Can anyone cross reference that number to which type of engine- was it a 3.0 or 3.5 litre? This may impact my purchase decision.
Thanks |

Original equipment engines have the engine number etched into the horizontal surface of the block where the IP attaches. Factory replacement blocks have that number sanded down (at least I'm told it looks sanded down rather than virgin) and an identification plate attached below the block heater attachment where the block flares to meet the transmission on the passenger side.
If you have the numbers 603 010 06 50, you must have found a tag on the passenger side of the block. EPC says that's a replacement 603.970 short block. A replacement 603.970 long block (with head) is 603 010 30 02, a complete replacement engine is 603 010 69 00. I'm curious to know if it has a #17 head casting. edit - appears to be a 3.5 Sixto 87 300D |

Allegedly
The Mercedes "replacement" (New or ReMan) blocks come with the limited edition "Strengthened" Connecting Rods.
I'd sure as Hell run the Engine ID tag number [It's a Metallic Tag] (Previously mentioned as being affixed to the engine side, just in front of the Transmission Bell housing) by the "Technical" people in Montvale ,NJ at Mercedes NA AND have them POSITIVELY identify the New "Improved" Rods by Part Number! (As being installed in your engine!)

Look for this tag on the bellhousing, on the passenger side of the car:
I was told PNs ending in 80 or 88 means a reman. My reman motor doesn't have anything on the flat surface in front of the injection pump. FWIW I believe my engine was made in 1998 (at least that's when the valve cover was cast), installed in 2002, and has a #22 head. See this thread. -Jason

My 3.5 doesn't have anything on the surface by the IP either, nor a sanded looking area, ... and is apparently original '91. No tag either, just a bar-code sticker by the bellhousing just like my 3.0 has.
