I'm making an educated guess that it is the heating/ac blower motor.

HVAC "Sensor" fan motor

It pulls air into the little grille above the top of the windshield next to the sunroof controls...
There is a Thermostat in the system that regulates your Heat and Air con.
(It lets the HVAC "Sense" the Ambient Cabin Air temperature.)
[They couldn't fit the fan motor up there,so there's a tube that runs down the
"A" pillar that allows the tiny fan motor to provide "Negative Wind" from it's
"Behind the Glovebox" Location]
'Bearings on the motor might just need a little "Lube"...

[The Blower motor that moves air into the Passenger cabin (It's UNDER the
Wiper Motor Up Front) is said to benefit from an occasional drop or two of
ATF on the shaft ,on either side of the motor.]

I'd sure try a drop of ATF on the Midget Air Mover's shaft before condemning it.

It's # 113 in the Diagram

It will "Run" anytime the key is "On"

Yo...'Got me Cogitating.

We all know the Auxiliary Coolant Pump can take out the CCU
(I'd cry Alligator Tears) if it "Locks Up" or "Burns Out".
[That's why savvy Mercedes Owners put a 1 Amp fuse in the line to the Aux pump]

BUT,Where does this Mini-blower Motor behind the Glove Box get it's power...?

(Sound of LOUD HORN...Like at a basketball stadium)

You've Guessed It ! [Same damn circuit as the Aux H2O Pump.]

This is from the 1986 diagram...
(AND I cannot find an update...so maybe this is still valid)

EDIT: I'm informed the correct fuse would be .2 Amps!

You Know Who'll Be Putting another .2 Amp Fuse in an Electrical Wire
behind the GloveBox later Tonight...?

my 85 had this motor, how hard would it be to add it to the 83's?

The older cars used the ACC blower (big fan) to pull air through the temp sensor. The advantage of the little fan is that the temperature sensor has a constant flow of air over it, rather than a changing flow as the ACC blower changes speed. I don't see why you couldn't add one and I just happen to have one for sale, see my recent post in the "Parts for Sale" section ($10 including free shipping in the US of A).

You would need to wire it to power, get the appropriate hose, and get the motor. Pretty simple. I just wired mine to the glove box light power works much better than the original 81 version.
