Products for purging your diesel...any ideas?

I was wondering what products would be good for purging my diesel merc. I have a 300SDL and I was going to use Lucas Injector Cleaner to purge my system (you know that stuff that has "upper cylinder lubricant"). Didnt know if it would do any damage...its a little thicker than the other stuff...about the consistency of corn oil.

I used "Diesel Kleen" before with ok results...would Lucas be a good one too?

Diesel Purge made by Lubro Moly is what I have used. You can either put a can or two in your tank. Or if you want a better cleaning put your supply and return lines into a bottle with a couple cans of diesel purge and run the engine until you've nearly emptied the bottle.

Some believe that if it's good for gassers and Diesels you shouldn't use it on a Diesel. Use Diesel specific products only.

Not sure of the benefit of upper cylinder lubricant in a MB Diesel since the side of the intake valve that would benefit from lubricant never sees fuel. I doubt the lubricant would survive combustion so it won't do much for the exhaust valve either.

Are you thinking of something to pour into the fuel tank or something used directly into the IP like Lubro Moly Diesel Purge?

well...on the packaging it says that its good for BOTH diesels and gassers and that it can treat 100 gallons of diesel. I was wanting to do a direct diesel purge...run on pure purge is what Im wanting...I wanna make those injectors last a while. Has anyone else ran pure purge with this product with good success?

Call Cummins Diesel if you have one near you. They once had a cleaner you ran through by hooking it up as the Moly Purge does. See if its still available because they don't recommend it for electronic injectors so they might have discontinued it. But it came in a gallon bag in a box.

I used sea foam a couple of times.. no real difference. Then a couple of days ago I used a mix of gum out injector cleaner and lucas injector cleaner.. big difference afterwards.
I heard that diesel purge is the best, but I never could find it.

Check out the prices for Diesel Purge on the TDI sites. http://www.worldimpex.com/parts/lubromoly-diesel-purge-16oz_60869.html

I usually pay about $7 a can or $14 a purge. Since you do it once a year it is worth it. Also, when I change the main filter I fill it with 1) Diesel Purge or 2) Diesel Kleen from Standyne or 3) B100 any of those work to clean the injectors.

If you are going to do a purge, do it right. Get a plastic container (an old Diesel Kleen jug works great) and two two foot lengths of fuel hose. Disconnect the inlet side of the fuel lines right before the plastic pre-filter and connect one of your hoses to the filter. Plug the line coming from the fuel tank (a 1/8" drill bit works great for this) Next disconnect the line coming from the fuel return (cigar hose on 616-617s) at the connector on top of the main filter. Attack the other hose to the connector on the filter. Stick the hoses into the jug and pour in 2 cans of DP, reserving about 4 ounces for filling the main fuel filter if you are changing it.. Wedge the jug somewhere will it will not slip out and will not get too hot. I wedge mine into the left front fender area behind the headlights.
Start the car and rev the engine a few times. Once it is running smoothly. take it for a couple spins around the block flooring it a few times. You should see massive clouds of black smoke coming from the tailpipe. 2 cans of DP gives you about 20 minutes of running time so you can get around the block a few times. Remember to take your phillips head screwdriver in case you need to switch back to the fuel tank out on the road!. When you get home look in the jug. You will be amazed at how black the remaining DP is! Remove your rig and reconnect the original hoses - changing the pre-filter at a minimum. I usually change both filters, pouring the DP I reserved earlier into the filter before screwing it on. Having fuel in the filter eliminates having to pump the primer 100 times on the older engines or cranking the crap out of a 603

You can also let your gas tank run close to empty and run two gallons of new transmission fluid in it. The engine will run like silk and the detergent agents in the transmission fluid will clean the fuel system extremely well. I usually do this after a Lubro Moly diesel purge, and the combination works great for me.

NAPA can order Lubro Moly products. One of their managers claims that they plan on stocking this regularly in their stores in early '09 after they do the year end inventory. He also claimed that they are going to start stocking more European car parts.

I think Johnhef had coking issues when he ran his car on a diet of ATF. John -- am I right?

I usually take the injectors out at 100K and have them tested and cleaned. I never cared for cleaner in a bottle. To me it feels like sweeping a room in the dark. You are never really sure if it is totally clean. Besides, the shop can find out whether the pop off is correct or not. The stuff in a can will never be able to do that.

Good point. I guess after 300,000 miles it is time to do mine
