No voltage from alternator....

So driving along today and my battery light came on, got back and threw a meter on it, no voltage from the alternator.

So is this an indication that the regulator is bad or the alternator? Would I be advised to rebuild the alternator when I replace the regulator for sanity's sake or just do the regulator and see?

Most of the time it is just the regulator. I would just try it. Even if it is the alternator it doesn't hurt to have a spare regulator on hand.

Agreed. The regulator is the usual culprit. It is much less expensive and easier to change.

Do the $15 regulator first.

Worst case, the alternator is bad and you have a spare regulator to keep with you.

I can't believe no one stocks them, everyone wants to sell me a new alternator.

SHENANIGANS! No one locally has it, I can get a brand new 65 amp alternator in stock for $105 with lifetime warranty from a local chain or I can order the regulator, 1 year warranty for $45 with shipping. Seems silly to buy the regulator.

You could pull your regulator and inspect it for obvious problems before you decide which way to go... If the contacts are to the nubs then it would be worth a shot to do the regulator and not the whole Alternator. If its got plenty of legs on it, then you might go the other way. Not a 100% sure thing but... something to think about.

I would do the regulator first as well. I think I paid $15 for it at the MB dealer. I got two of them at that time.

If you have to replace the alternator, go for the AL129x 115 Amp one. It is a very easy upgrade and make a ton of difference! I do not see the reason to replace an understrength 65A alternator with more understrength garbage...

You can look on ebay for one like I did, go to the bone yard and look at late 1980's Saabs, or probabaly the AutoZoo can get one for you.

lots of alts use that regulator- go to a junkyard and grab one, it will get you by until you get a 115 amp alt to put in. or just get a bigger alt now.

if you do go to Autozoo, etc, dont mention the fact that it is for a different car(mbz) just order one from a saab,(verify year, make model) then swap the pulleys and return the mbz unit for the core.

my 2¢

Ok I did this and I scraped off the label from my old one. The new alt will be here at 2:30, I'm hoping the look exactly the same cause I am going to take this one in when i pick up the old one. I will report back.

ok so this is a funny story, I go in and the guy pulls both alternators and says "oh we need to swap pulley's and reclock this alternator" I said yea they are a little different, that one's higher amp, but looks like the same case. He says yea might as well get the high output one. (yes i was honest) He didn't care, sounded like a core is a core. So anyhow, they swapped pulley's and reclocked it for me (locally owned parts store). It was a little more then the 65 amper, but screw it. I just got back, will install tomorrow if I wake up on time.
