Retrofit pencil plug part number

Bosch 0 250 201 044-710

Are there other part numbers for the pencil style retrofit plug?

I had come up with these numbers in my searches.

0 250 001 016
0 250 201 039
0 250 201 044

Is only the last one correct?

Don't know about the other part numbers but the 044 one is available here at Fastlane.

FYI

My son needed a couple of retrofit plugs, but bought the wrong ones.

I just looked at the part number

0 250 001 016 - Bosch 80003

This was the loop style.

[QUOTE=kerry;2064432]From another thread on the question:

"Pencil glow plug for loop-style engines is Bosch 80035; available at NAPA for $18.83 ea."[/QUOTE

I went to napa today and checked on some plugs and gave them the 80035 number . He called around and found 4 on the east coast . He said that Bosch showed this as a discontinued / obsolete part number .

Any one heard of this ? If so are there any updates ? I would hate to revert back to the wire type.

upgrade plugs

I'm not sure if the 80035 is an old Bosch part number but if you search it on the web you can find them under that part number on for about $12.50 each . I'm quite sure they are the same plug as the Bosch 0 250 201 044 Duraterm . That is the plug that comes in the upgrade kit[0 250 201 955] . This plug pretty much upgrades any Mercedes with the old style loop plugs to the quick glow pencil style. . Here is a list as stated on the box the kit was shipped in :

W 115/8 [01.68-01.77]
200D,220D,240D,240 3.0

W 123 [02.76-07.80]
200,220,240,300D/TD- not listed but CD also I would think.

G 460 [03.79-07.80]
240D,300D

T1 [08.77-10.85]
207D,307D

L-Serie [01.71-07.77]
L206,L306,L406,L407

O 309 Serie
[01.67-08.82]

Unimog [04.63-12.76]
U406,U411,U421,U45,U55,U52,U60

OM 636-Serie
[01.61-12.71]

I saw on a Bosch web site where they stated that this kit works on many other vehicles using the old loop style with the 21mm wrench size .

I do know these Duraterm plugs run on 11 Volts . I'm not sure about the voltage of the old plugs.... anyone know? . I know a lot of people run them on their old relay[me included/79-300TD] but buying the upgrade kit with the updated relay might not be a bad idea .It does allow for up to a three minutes after glow . I have seen the whole kit for a 4 cylinder for $98.00 on the web recently . The instructions are next to useless . In fact my kit came with instructions for a five cylinder upgrade . Of course the first thing they said was- do the four cylinder instructions first ... If your doing a five cylinder upgrade with the new relay the instructions state ,
"Do not connect the glow plug of cylinder 5 with the glow plugs of cylinders 1 to 4 . Short circuit danger!."

I was trying to get the ," service kit" as it is called in some ads . Forget it, it is not to be found . It is supposed to be a kit with an extra 12V relay 0 332 002 156[for the fifth plug] ,a fuse holder , fuse , nut , and wire . Some ads make it sound like it comes with the kit .It doesn't . All suppliers [ including the ones for this site] told me all you need is the extra plug for the five cylinder upgrade. Well, doesn't seem that's quite right if you believe Bosch.
Bottom line , These plugs work great .Seven seconds of glow time and my car[250K and not the best compression] starts right up in 15-20 F weather .I did just put a brand new starter in that might help things and a huge Optima battery that is in peak condition . I also replaced my old battery cables and replaced the ground wire from the engine to the chassis .
Hope this information helps anyone looking into the upgrade .
Spike.

The old series wired loop plugs are seeing about 1.5 to 2 volts drop each. The 12 volts from the battery is distributed across the 4 plugs in the engine, the 5th one in the dash, and also across the squiggly wires connecting the plugs in the engine. In a 5 cyl app, I suspect that the squiggly wires have a different resistance to compensate, but maybe not?? Anyway, the loopers are not designed to see the full 12 volt drop that the later parallel wired pin style see.

I was just wondering if the plug is obsolete as napa stated . Is there a updated one or possibly an adapter for the smaller pencil type from the later models . These are easy to find . The retro type are the ones you need to order large bodied pencil type.

Spikesdiesel you have the right 10 digit number. when you buy them seperate theres a large number on the box 80035. They usually order it by the 10 digit one. napa said checking bosch's site they come up obsolete.

I already have the upgraded set up just wondering if whats left on shelves are all that are available.

That explains an issue that came up about a month ago when someone was trying to do a 5 cylinder conversion using the original relay (I think). It would work with 4 plugs but not five. Wonder why that is the case?

I just checked my packing slip that my kit was shipped with . I ordered a fifth plug and on the slip it has the 80035 number on it also W0133-1629394 referring to it .I think like whunter said the number 80035 was on the plug box but I threw that box out and, yes the number on the plug itself was the 0 250 201 044 number .

I had to wonder why Bosch had to make the upgrade relay work only for a 4 cylinder application and why they couldn't make it work for both 4 and 5 . Maybe to optimize the current going to the plugs for the 4-cylinder set up . I know the kit comes with a replacement indicator light that is an LED to max the current to the plugs . If I read correctly these fast glow plugs draw LESS current than the old style loop plugs but get way hotter quicker . I would assume the new relay is designed to make them work at their best[as far as quickest heat up] where an old relay will do the job but maybe not as good ...? not sure . Maybe the wrong voltage into them isn't good for longevity either .I think I've spent way to much time thinking about this thing... I know my wife thinks so .

If you are doing an upgrade with the relay you need to mount the new relay in the engine compartment even if your old one was under the dash . The timer in the relay is controlled by the heat given off by the engine and the wire coming from the sensor on the cylinder head to the relay[if you have one] is no longer needed. The new relay gives a three minute after glow if needed .
Hope this information helps anyone thinking about doing the upgrade . If you have old style loop plugs you will never be sorry you did the upgrade .
Spike.
