Diesel fuel odor on W124.......OM606

so... i guess i'm used to getting fogged w/ my 240 & its exaustless self...

but my mother complained (wonders whats new) @ every stoplight or so of horrible smells

i've got this distinct diesel odor either when stopping, sitting, or accelerating...
i'm trying to pinpoint how it works...
only with windows down...
i think its coming from infront of me rather than behind...

leaky injectors?!

or should i start looking for a hole in the exaust?!

any big problems w/ those symptoms these cars put out!?

keep in mind i've only driven 260 miles or so since purchase && when filling up tonight... did the math & got 34.7 MPG... so if the injectors are leaking its not much...
will pop hood tomorrow...
but i'm looking for pointers beings i never wrenched a 124 myself...
its all greek to me

thanks in advance.
Matt

Check the fuel injector return lines. That's a pretty common replacement item.

On my 617 engine, they are easy to spot. A metal line feeds each injector, the return line (6 mm, I think) connects all the injectors with a plug on the last one. If they are leaking, they will be damp with diesel fuel.

Houston (as in NASA)??

You're not new to the forum so I probably don't need to tell you about the Search function or the DIY section.

Welcome to the joys of tracking down repair items on a newly aquired vehicle! I'm assuming you are talking about a Diesel fuel smell rather than an exhaust smell. On your car, the rubber return lines are mostly under the black plastic cover on top of the engine. I believe that you also have to remove the intake crossover pipe to gain access to it.

Another item you might check is the delivery valve seals. Look at the driver's side of the engine, under the intake manifold and locate the injection pump. Look along the top row of lines for any fuel seepage.
