well, the truck should weight slightly less than the merc when all is said and done (I think...), but then again the truck has larger tires. So I expect acceleration to be roughly the same.

I'll report 0-60 times and have the truck dyno'ed after all is said and done.

When I first saw the thread I figured that you would mate the 617 to the Chevy tranny somehow.
My plan is to have a custom driveshaft made. I've spoken with N.W. Drivetrain in Houston about having the work done (I hear they do "from scratch" driveshafts), but they guy there won't tell me he can do it for sure until he sees what he is working with. I'm going to take some vacation next monday and have the truck hauled out there (hopefully by then I will have the cab off to make it easier on him).

The approach I want to take is to keep the back 90% of the drive shaft stock GM, and just put a mercedes tip on it. I plan to do this with a driveshaft from a junkyard 240D I picked up a few weeks ago. The outer diameter of the GM driveshaft is 2.50", and the outer diameter of the mercedes shaft is 60mm (2.36"). So I'm hoping they can put both driveshafts on a lathe (bore out the GM, and turn down the merc) so that the sleeve into one another, and them weld them together. I figure that's the best bet for having something which has minimal run-out (ie, stays straight) and will be balanceable.

also, for the record, here is what I have found out about mercedes driveshafts.

my 1979 300SD has a two piece driveshaft, but the aft-shaft is much thicker than the fore-shaft. the fore-shaft appears to be 45mm, and the aft-shaft appears to be 80mm.

the (unknown year) 240D from which I got my donor driveshaft is a two-piece as well, but both halves are the same diameter (65mm).

Sounds like a reasonable plan. I'm looking forward to seeing the resulting driveshaft.

What's the rear end in that truck geared like? I'm either missing that info, or it hasn't been discussed yet.

If it were me, I would have an adapter machined similar to the earlier post with the flange mounted u-joint. Then you won't have to monkey around with a weird custom driveshaft that no one wants to touch, not to mention the possible vibration problems of mixing a u-joint with a flex disk.

Doing away with the flex disk

Hey Cell, Driveshafts.com makes a fixture to bolt on the rear flange to use a ujoint and you could do away with the benz driveshaft hassle altogether, you could use a aftermarket driveshaft vibration dampener to deal with any problems using a chevy ds. Panzzer

Really!?! Man, I wish these companies would put stuff like that on their website so that crackpot inventors like me could find it.

I'll send them an email about it. Thanks for the tip!

Doesn't anyone feel bad about the
116 that gave it's heart and soul for
this project? It doesn't look to have been in
bad shape.

I was thinking the same thing. What was wrong with the Mercedes body?

You're doing great work there. Please keep the pictures coming. I think lots of us have transplant fantasies and here you're really doing it. Bravo!
