manual transmission

hello mercedesshop.com my 79 300sd's tranny is starting to slip, and the one in my 78 is no greater. I have found a 83? 240D in a parts yard near my house, it has a four speed manual tranny, I have searched and found that people here have been successful swaping in a manual into the 123 turbo diesel... But I cant find much info on swaping it into a 116, has anyone accomplished this? should i yank the tranny while i can and worry about modifications later? are there any manual transmissions that were installed in the 116 gassers that can be swapped into the diesels??
thanks in advance.

The 116 gasser tranny is the same as far as physical dimensions goes, but i'm not sure about gear ratios. In other words, it will bolt up, but may not be very friendly to drive.

Others will post who have more experience and can give you a list of all the things to get, but I can at least tell you that you NEED to go GET that transmission.

A complete "kit" of all the parts necessary to run a conversion can be worth $500.

So you would want to get the clutch pedal assembly, driveshaft, manual shifter, etc. as well as just the transmission in order to have a "kit" to convert a factory automatic over to an operable manual transmission car.

I have read something about the w116 driveshaft being desirable in the conversion but I imagine that this refers to the conversion in a 123.. Anyone out there that can verify this? Or have any info on mating the 4 speed to the 617 in a 116?

chilton manual refers to the 4speed manaul in 240d's 81 and later as gl68/20a and it says that the five speed in 190d's is gl68/20a-5... I'm assuming that these aren't interchangable. Anyone out there? Can the 240 stick be put into the w116 300sd?

IF it can be done, ( i think there is a very good chance that it will all bolt up)you will also need the flywheel from the 240, and, i believe, have it checked for balance.

what is the number of your tranny? it is on the right side, just above the pan gasket. mine reads 722.315

there is plenty of reading on this site to be done, and hopefully someone whom has swapped in a 4 spd to a 123 can chime in and help. one thing is that a 123 clutch pedal prolly does not bolt right into a 116. but anything is possible, with enough cash and time.

AKAIK, mbz transmissions all used the same ratio. it was the final drive that is different between cars.

The 240D 4 speed will bolt up to your engine. The hard part will be the drive shaft, and possibly the pedals. I know the W123 pedals will fit the W126, but I don't know about the W116. Do a search for "auto to manual conversion" and don't skip having the flywheels match balanced.

There is a good drive shaft shop that specializes in Mercedes in Portland. I had them make my drive shaft when I did my turbo engine swap. It cost a few hundred bucks though. http://www.driveshafts.com/

very cool I will check the tranny number in the morning I imagined it to fit the engine, it's just a question of modifying the trans mounts/cross member/pedal/linkages. I found a thread in which "youngbenz" is discussing putting a standard into a 126 sd, I'll have to follow along!

Manual desire..

Not to change the subject too much but could anyone also point me in the direction of manual window regulators? I can't find any for my chasis, 116, I yanked a manual window regulator from a 123 I managed to bolt it up and attach it to my window bracket after some modifying. Sweet success I thought until I rolled it up and it was three inches shy of closing my window..

Back to the trans, i've found from searching that 5 speeds are
Desired and rare, the tranny on the 190d has a very similar part number to the 240 trans.. Are these interchangable? There is a 190x at the yard too, I'll check to see if it has a standard trans when I go on thursday.

unfortunately no, this wont work. the 190 5 speed has the starter on the opposite side

Bgkast and all else with manual diesels, I am curious, are you able to push start your manual, perhaps after a couple of glow plug cycles?

I have not heard of anyone converting a W116, but I don't see why it wouldn't work. Most of the W123 swap info applies just the same on the W116 as the turbo engine is the same. You won't find any W116 pedal sets, but the W123 or possibly W115 should be close enough to work with some mods.

If it's indeed possible to push start a diesel, could one bolt the 190d's 5 speed to a 617 without a starter and sacrifice some daily calories to start it with no starter? this is a little outlandish but it depends how bad someone would want a 5 speed hah
