Instrument Panel light out - which fuse?
I just bought a 1987 300sdl turbo with 197,000 miles. I've been researching and have joined your site, a well run and active one at that. The car needs a little TLC and a new coat of paint, but otherwise it has good service records and runs well. Question: The instrument panel is dark and I do need to see it at night. I've tried, but not yet figured out which small fuse or metal box fuse controls the instrument panel light. Which one is it? Thanks for the help.

It may not be a fuse but rather the rheostat in the instrument cluster might be damaged, worn, or simply not making good contact. Do any of the other interior lights (lighted switches, etc.) work or is it just the cluster that is dark?
As regards fuses – I don't have diagrams for an SD – you can check the fuse box under the hood. Remove and check each fuse, sometimes they develop a hairline crack that can't even be seen but when you pull the fuse it falls into two parts. Jeremy

Got it fixed
Thanks for the tips. Turns out to have been the switch, which my friendly San Antonio German car repair folks helped with for a reasonable price. I've become confused about the wide array of repair manuals for these cars and will spend some time studying to find the "right" one for this 1987 300sdl w/ 205,000 miles. Regards, Rick M
