The metal molding pulls out. It is difficult to do without bending it, but can be done, just take your time. Slide the center connecter off to one side before beginning and it is best to have a plastic pry-tool around like you use to install rubber-gasketed windows.

My '87 300D was leaking water into the trunk and I figured it was the rubber molding around the trunk, so I picked up a replacement one and did it a couple weeks ago. The issue wasn't really the seal (even though it really was beat up). The problem was with the molding clips below the rear window, so that piece of molding I removed. There are (if I remember right) 6 clips that are pop riveted to the body and they have a u-shaped channel that the molding pops into, gripping the molding pretty good. One of the clips actually rusted apart, so that was where my leak came from. Anyway, if you slide something flat (I used an actual molding removal tool) under the molding and feel where the clip is, you can then pry it up right next to the clip. Be careful that you are not prying against the glass because you can break it.
