300 turbo diesel with a four speed manual?

I have a 300SD with a good engine and a bad tranny. I found a car that is in pretty good condition that is a W123 fours speed manual that possibly has a bad engine for cheap. Is it possible to mate a 300 turbo diesel to a 4 speed tranny and will the bigger engine fit in the engine compartment? thanks, stephen

It has been done, but will require modifications. search on the forum for 4 speed swaps, and you will find a lot of answers.

I think there was a recent thread where someone was swapping a 4speed into a 300SD.

I saw that. that is pretty cool! I want to put the 300turbo in the W123. I have noticed alot of people doing it the other way around. that requires new drive shaft and other modifications. I just want to know if i can swap the engine in the W123 and if it will fit or not.

Is the w123 a 240D or a 300D? If it is a 300D, the OM617 is interchangeable between them except for a few parts like engine mount arms.

It means his left index finger slipped and hit the "F" key when he meant to hit the "R" key.

Forced is still around. If you have a 300D parts car, you can to the swap easily to get the few 300D specific parts, like engine mount arms, oil pressure sender, inst cluster, etc.

If i am just replacing the engine in a W123 240d 4 speed manual with a 300sd motor...I dont need a new instrument cluster. and the pressure sender is in place of the hose that goes to the mechanical guage on the cluster. I understand that I would need new arms..but those i can get easily from the pick n pull. I dont need a new drive shaft if the original one from the 240d is ok, unless the engine is so much longer that the D.S. bottoms out and has no play. my main concern is will the bell housing's bolt match the trans of a 240d? and will the drive shaft need to be replaced or not.

The drive shaft and shifter linkages from both cars are not the right length. You have to shorten the 240d driveshaft.

I think what stephen is saying is that he wants to plop a 617 into a manual 123 240d, without moving the manual transmission, linkage, or driveshaft.

I do not know if that would work tho. wouldn't the 617 mounts not line up with the cars mounts?

Someone educate me.
