Coda, 1986 300SDL, the journey continues........
Okay, in the spirit of making Coda better, I've made the following list of things to repair\fix\make better:
Additions to list: Chain stretch and IP timing Current Mileage 208,584; Born in 07/1986 --- guess I better get busy if I'm going to get all that done before the Texas GTG, huh? Anyone want to help? Edit: Here are just a few of the FIRST pics, I took of Coda --- in 2008. Please notice the air filter change. The first things I did when I got her were, new air filter, oil change (always with a new filter), diesel purge, new primary filter, new secondary (spin on) filter, treat the tank with Starton, replace all the fuel return lines (major leaks), and go drive the thing like a bat out of hell. What lies ahead inside? And how will I be able to read that radio? My fingers will never fit those little buttons while I'm driving. At least she did have a brand new battery and a fairly new hood pad.

Chain stretch and IP timing. If you touch IP timing, be ready for that 22 year old o-ring to give.

Wished you lived closer, I would love to help!

Parts I will need.....
Okay, I already have a new idler assembly and a new serpentine belt. I'm requesting the following parts from Phil:
Motor Mounts. Motor "shock absorber" thingy. Gasket for the new type of vacuum pump. Any gaskets I would need for the removal of the crossover exhaust tube. Delivery Valve o-rings and copper crush washers for Injection Pump. Shut Off Lever o-ring Anything else you all can think of that I will need? OH, yeah, anyone have the Delivery Valve spline tool and that Torx wrench I need. I can either buy them or borrow them from you. I'm also open to the barter system, so if there's something you need or want that I have or that I can get you......please let me know. Chain Stretch --- I guess I'll have to go do some research.

I know it's ealy in 2009, but that is a strong contender for "understatement of the year".
I predict he wins with that!!

OH....I've washed it 2 or 3 times since those pics were taken. Those were taken in March 2008. You wouldn't recognize a current pic to those.....unless the Brake Fluid reservoir showed up in the new pic. It's about the ONLY thing that looks the same.
Well, like I said, I have a spare bedroom and bath.....Maybe, an on hands w126 workshop at a Bed and Breakfast?

need some ideas........
Okay, the bad news --- Coda would not start this morning. The temperature in the garage (much warmer outside this morning than days in the past) was about 49F. It cranks and cranks and cranks; will NOT fire. It's like she is not getting ANY fuel. I drove it yesterday to work, started fine, then at lunch, then home, then again last night to run to Costco and she started fine each time.
Does the fuel gauge register when the key is in the ON position or does the car have to be running? Is it possiblle my fuel drip issue worsen overnight to the point of NOT starting? Is it possible the "prime" of the fuel system was lost overnight with the leaks in my delivery valves? Here's what I've done this morning: 1. Allow a full glow plug cycle until the relay CLUNKS off. 2. Removed a fuel return line to see if I'm getting fuel. It is dribbling during cranking. 3. Checked the SHUT OFF lever --- it is UP. 4. Checked the fuses --- all look good; although if it is cranking it should start IF it is getting fuel. 5. Opened up Injector Line #5 at the injector --- cranked a few times; cannot see fuel on paper towel --- of course this Injector is ONE of TWO of the injector lines where I suspect I have a leak in the IP Delivery Valves on #2 (or 3) and #5. 6. Ran down battery. The primary fuel filter is dirty (been meaning to change it), but I see fuel in it. I'll be changing both fuel filters in the course of solving the NO START condition. I have to wonder if I ran out of fuel JUST as I pulled into the garage last night. Plan of ATTACK: Set up a fuel bottle next to primary fuel filter. Charge battery. Check glowplugs --- although at 49, I'm thinking Coda could start within 10 seconds of cranking without glow plugs. Order O-rings and Crush washers today for Delivery Valve repair. Is there anything that I've overlooked? Thanks.

Is the dash light coming on during the glow cycle? If not, your best bet is to do the glow plug diags posted at dieselgiant.com. You might have one or more bad glow plugs.

The fuel gauge should register when the key is in the run position.
I think the leaking DV seals can allow air to leak back into the IP and cause it to loose its prime. Try priming the heck out of it.
