300SDL Best ATF for the price?

What do you think is the best ATF, either for the price, or simply the best money can buy? (its not that expensive) I am considering going with Amsoil. Does Benz make their own? i cant seem to find any. I have heard a lot of people use Mobil Synthetic.

I have used Mobil 1, but it should be very good from any of the big guys. Amsoil, Royal Purple, Redline, etc.

gsxr and the performance guys prefer Redline Dex II (labeled Synthetic ATF) over the other Redline ATF formulations (D4, D6, etc. which are also synthetic).

Mobil 1 ATF might or might not be good stuff but it's discouraging that product labeling keeps changing while website information doesn't. I'm running Mobil 1 ATF without issue now but I will choose something else if they don't reconcile package and website or at least answer the two messages I've sent.

Some of the changes in nomencleture may have to do with the fact that "Dexron" is a GM trademark. GM quit licensing "Dexron III" in 2005. I think that is forcing the aftermarket manufacturers to rename their products.

IMHO if money is no object Redline makes the best products on the market. Their oil is fantastic, but extremely pricey.

But if I had a 300SL Gullwing, or SLR 722 I would use Redline products. If I remember correctly Jay Leno uses Redline engine oil in his pre war blower Bentley's.

I can get Amsoil for $20ish a gallon, Redline diesel oil is almost twice that. So I use Amsoil.

I've been reluctant to switch to synthetic ATF in either my SDL or my 300D because of cautions people have raised about the potential adverse effects in swithcing from dino to synth in high mileage cars. I use synthetic engine oil (Delvac 1), but I just can't seem to pull the trigger when it comes to the tranny. If I ever had to reseal or rebuild one, then I would switch to Mobil 1.
