Anyone brought MB diesel from Europe?
I so want diesel wagon with manual. I am looking at this one and my uncle can buy it for under $2000. This is 1987 non turbo 200TD, dealer serviced with 200k miles. I can arrange cheap shipping to NY but don't know what's next. Is it difficult or expensive process in here to have this car registered?

I think you're going to have problems bringing in a car that's less than 25 years old. There are firms that specialize in this though, and you ought to check with them.

It looks like it can be done but there must be a lot of BS around it, maybe too much for a $2000 car. On the other hand it is 40MPG car

A 73hp 2.0L OM601 in a 4000lb wagon? That would make a 240D look like a nascar.
You wouldn't be able to import it to the USA anyways. Its less than 25 years old and that engine combo was never sold in the states. You would have to get it modified and certified to meet federal emissions and safety standards before they would allow through the port. |

Much Cheaper (Than Importing,Legally)
Find the Original: engineers(Who designed),manufacturers(who assembled),
Etc.,Etc.,Etc., AND have THEM all imported on temporary work visas to HAND make you the car in the US to EPA and DOT specifications. UNLESS...You have a DIPLOMATIC passport from a Foreign Entity. (Then you can bypass all the Federal Folderol)

Forced, would 300D make any difference in that matter? As for 200 I don't know if it's the torque or gears but somehow this little engine does just fine. No really, I drove it and You can keep with the traffic (crazy traffic) Of course it's not a rocket but has decent acceleration and gets 40 MPG |

Before making a decision, consider checking out what else there is available. I would recommend http://www.mobile.de/home/index.html# (click on English if it is displayed in German). It's the biggest used car website in Europe and you can get a pretty comprehensive picture from that what they are worth and what is available.
Also note that it is quite common that cars around here have their odos tinkered with, those 200k miles could actually be something much higher. Ask for service records, anything, that could prove it's mileage. A second note on condition; almost all cars from eastern/central Europe/Scandinavia have been subjected to road salt and thus can have som rust. There's also no "highway miles" around here, most vehicles have been driven in city traffic thus more wear.

as others have said, if a car is less than 25 years old (from the date of manufacture) importing it is very hard. Over 25 years and the car is exempt from all DOT and EPA requirements and is comparatively a breeze. So look for something made around 1984 or earlier next time and you can sail it over no problem.

I only know of one person who does it all the time from Japan with AMG'd cars. But a lot of the Jap cars are US models, or very similer. Heck 300SDL's found their way over their.
As for getting a car from Europe good luck. Think Porsche 959, its damn near impossible.
