a lowlife in every hobby....
well I filled up today, appearently sometime between today and the last fill up some dirtbag switched my cast aluminum mercedes gas cap for a sheetmetal autozone cap. Why on earth would someone risk being caught stealing a gas cap of all things. I dont even care about the cap, it just really irks me because 1. they obviously already had a working cap, 2. I think it happened at a PNP so they know where to get a cheap original with little effort and 3 because I know it was someone in our hobby. people always seem to want something they dont have a right to have without working, or in this case working very little for it. I do believe in Kahrma, in their own way too Im sure they will recieve a small payback...... At least they didnt steal my wheels

Yeah, that sucks. Losing your wheels would have be way worse, though.

I came home today and discovered that someone had taken all my cars and moved them one inch to the right and back one inch to the left!

Of course, an inch to the right or left isn't so bad considering the neighbor who moved you SL up, over the curb, and into your yard . . . .

On a MB with proper locking the fuel-door is locked when the car is locked. Does your locking system work properly?
My wife's 300E has a generic cap too....I DID have a gasser cap I got from the junk yard, but now of course I can't find it. Eventually I will, or I'll get another....they're free.

It's odd that they bothered to replace it with another cap. Are there varying degrees of thievery? Maybe (s)he believes in karma, too, and just figured they'd get off a little lighter if they swapped a replacement on there. Weird, though!

They didn't want to be considered a total thief.. could it have been those gremlins on TV, heating up the asphalt so the bike tips over?

That's very odd. Fix that vacuum locking system! They could have stolen $50 of diesel.

I was also puzzled with the cap replacement, he/she was all heart I guess......they must have parked right next to me. As far as the vacuum, I never lock anything except the trunk so I have disconnected the vacuum line to all of the doors and such. My passenger door lock vacuum pod broke as I was showing JackG that some actually do work. from that point on the lock line has been disconnected. I dont think the gas lock worked even then, and I was thinking the gas door pod was not available anymore. Maybe I can make it manual from the trunk, or Ill just leave the autozone one on there to reduce the attractiveness of the cap.

Sorry to hear about this and it is indeed pretty weird. Maybe the thief didn't want you spilling fuel all over the road. Maybe he or she was an environmentalist. You can certainly lock the fuel tank flap from your trunk if your vacuum system doesn't work. I never leave any of my vehicles unattended & unlocked. It has always seemed to me like asking for trouble.
