What tools do I need to remove a 300TD hatch?
So apparently the shocks need some sort of special bit... or do they? I haven't bothered looking under any of my ceiling trim to see what exactly is under there. The rest of the stuff attaching it appear just be plain bolts.

You'll need a hex head socket or allen key IIRC. But I believe you need to remove the speaker and bracket to get access.
If you're just removing the hatch, you don't need to take the shocks out too. Just disconnect the shocks from the hinges or mark the position of the hinges on the hatch and remove the hatch from the hinges.

On mine the front end of the struts are fastened by a torx bolt. I don't remember the size, but i bought the struts from mercedes$ource and they came with instructions and a few different torx bits and a hex bit and one of them fit the bolt. For some reason I had to work the bit with a box end wrench, I don't remember why, probably due to access. But once that bolt is out, the strut slides out rearward.
As for replacing the hatch, the simplest way is to unbolt the two bolts on each side that fasten the hatch to the hinges (then you don't even have to mess with the struts). The hatch comes right off. You have to remove the speaker panel to disconnect the electrical connections and rear window squirter tube. Pretty easy job, you need two people. EDIT You're right, it isn't a torx, its a 12 pointed torx. Here's the bits that came with my struts. Its one of these fit the bolt, the sizes are 6, 8, 10, and 12mm.
