Looking at an 87 300d 6cyl turbo.

Anyone here own one that have some good things to say on behalf of this vintage MB?Never even driven this 6 cyl turbo before ,do they go as long as the 123 cars?

Great cars. I'd go for the 5 cylinder because 7 mpg better. But that's faster.

Love mine. Thirstier than a 90-93, and the 90-93 has lighter steering.

But I like the power of the 6 cylinder. I see 27-29 combined out of my 87. Seen as high as 33 mostly highway. But usually a smidge under 30mpg. Whereas my 91 and 92 always returned low 30s. But MPG is its own huge debate.

I like the 87s.

Makes a 123 look like a piece of farming equipment. Part of why I've held onto my 87 is it has a lot of features, returns respectable by modern standards MPG, is comfortable and spacious by modern standards, keeps up in traffic, etc. I think its a good car even compared to much newer cars.

Wonderful cars, wonderful engines. Maintain it and you should see 350k-400k easily before any significant engine maintenance.

However, ...

Like any older car, its history will predict its future. Seriously neglected or abused and it will own you.

Suspension bushings, cooling system, transmission, A/C system, sunroof, all should be looked at.

Yes ,its not at an extreme level of cost from what Ive experience with other Car Makers .The Newer the car the more likely the parts are OEM with no access for rebuilt parts.

not when you factor in the replacement costs for OE parts...
