Synthetic Oil Question

Is Delvac going to be better for my engine(87 300SDL with about 190k on it and a few slight leaks) in the winter with temps in the 20's and 30's over shell Rotella?

When i say Rotella i dont mean the blue bottle synthetic, i mean the cheap white bottle.

Is Delvac Synthetic?

The Delvac i'm referring to is Delvac 1300.

a lot of people like to use synthetic, especially in the winter. You could probably use 5w-40 weight of any diesel rate oil and be fine in your climate.

note: this is only one of 985,578 points of view concerning this matter

::matthew --- are you sure you counted everyone in that 985,578? Number seems a little low to me on this particular subject...I just don't want anyone to feel left out --- LOL!!

Delvac 1300 is in a black jug and is NOT synthetic. Delvac 1 is in a silver jug, and it IS synthetic. The price difference is very apparent as well.

For what it is worth, I use Delvac 1, exclusively now. Even in my gas engined autos. Jim

Oh No, oil question!

I have been using Rotella Syn and M1 TD 5W40 in both the 300SD and the SDL. Now I see more and more bottles of Delvac 1 and not so many bottles of M1 TD on the shelf.
So, between Delvac 1 and M1 Turbo diesel (both 5W40) which is better? Are they the same in different bottles or is there a reason to use Delvac 1?

There was an oil thread on here (go figure an oil thread) that said they were the same. The Mobil site said so, they were just in different bottles for marketing purposes. Now that was at least a year ago, so it may have changed.

Must be regional....last time I was at autozone less than a week ago it was still $19.99 a gallon........but Mobil 1 TD was $7.49 a quart!! Thats $30 a gallon!!

I ran my engine on Delvac 1300 for about half a year, then went with dino Rotella for another half a year, then I ran Mobil 1 for about 1.5 years....then I finally ended up with Rotella Syn, and thats what I've been running the past 3.5ish years/55,000+ miles. Runs great with it and cold starts are no problem.

Back when I ran it on Dino Delvac 1300 and Rotella 15w40....it liked that too. IMHO it ran the roughest/loudest on Mobil 1 TD..... *flame suit on*

i hear a lot of talk about running synthetic, and having to replace a lot of seals that will leak, is this true?

If it is true how true is it?

YES, all the seals that leaked with petroleum oil will leak with synthetic oil.
