Griiiiiinnnd grind grind grind 1985 300sd

I knew I was wasting away a rotor... grriiiindddd grind grrrrriiiiiii

but Im broke and basically homeless.

Anyway..... I got to fix this.

it occured to me today though that it might be wheel bearing and not rotor...

ooooohhhh shiat......

for some reason just today I realized it happens when slowing down w/out the brakes on.

Maybe thats new... maybe it has allways been that way since I first heard it and assumed it was metal to metal brakes.

Would bad wheel bearing grind more as brakes are applied?

It could. YOu have to pull the wheel and look at your brake pads to tell. That is free.

I will ship you some pads used if you pay shipping. You don't wanna be running around with metal to metal on your brakes.

I probably have several sets with half pad left. I keep them around for use in case I have a bad one and for some reason cannot get pads immediately.

Same thing happened to me.

Not saying that it wouldn't, but when you have bad bearings they usually don't change tone when you hit the brakes. At least I have never seen it. Check for a rock, then debris shield, then pads.

Disk pads are always in contact with the rotor.

When I've had wheel bearings go bad to the point of grinding, there was a significant effect on the steering and literally was unable to control the vehicle in a curve. Applying the brakes would make it "straighten up" temporarily.

Worn out brake pads can cause noise while under way if there is virtually nothing left of the pad and resulting in the backing flopping from side to side. This can also make the piston over-extend and loose its seal.

phewwwwwwww.... Im relieved.

cheaper to fix brakes than metal worn down on a stub shaft. Particularly when it's so bad is causes a wheel to fall off... that is no fun.

Seen it happen in an old Jeep going down the road in front of me. He kept going as a wheel and stub axle just rolled away . He made it to the side of the road before dropping his front passenger wheeless side into the ground. Could have been real bad. He was lucky. It was on old Flatfender.

both the calipers and the rotors are different, but if you have to change BOTH, rotors and calipers, they will fit on either car...

if you're really in a bad spot, you can usually get away w/ only replacing the pads, even if the rotor is hashed. they will last a while. and I think oreilly has a set of pads for like $11- you could spend a few hours combing the ditches for beercans to make that $$.

That's a good idea. I have lots of can's. I collect them from the machine at my biz.

I actually own a biz. That's why Im broke lol. My employess are getting paid and Im not. Havent paid myself in over a year now.

But....... Im officially not "homeless now" With both the parts car/back up SD (fuel issues, I fixed this weekend) and my VW down (ground fault? Wiring fault??, causing computer Immobilizer to freeze the car- computer VW wizard been chasing the issue for 6 months now) I was in affect homeless (sleeping on floor of my office) but now that I got the SD running (just not stopping well) I can actually drive home. Half hour commute with wheels. With that being, what a 6-8?? hour walking commute; homeless on the office floor looked better.

Home is a small cabin, battery/generator powered out in the boonies. Im driving home tonight for the first time in a reeal long time. Im excited. But it will also be COLDDDDD lol. no heat on in there for a long time.

When brakes are fixed I'll get a part time job. When VW fixed.... I'll be on cloud nine.
