Where can someone find a turbo OM617?

Hey guys,

I've been searching for a while for a reasonable priced OM617 turbo motor to replace the non-turbo OM617 motor in my Unimog. I know you can't just bolt a turbo setup onto a non-turbo, so I've been trying to find a complete turbo OM617 setup... but they seam to be hard to come by with all of the accessories (pump, manifold, turbo, etc) still attached.

If anyone knows of one for sale, or knows of someone who'd want a 0 mile rebuilt non-turbo motor w/ accessories on trade, please let me know! I'm located in Edmonton, AB, Canada and would hope to find something somewhat close.

Cheers,

Corey

I'd think it easier to find a complete car... especially up north where the bodies don't seem to last as long... ya should be able to find a deal and a half on a car....

metric sells a completely rebuilt long block for $7,850, not including core charge or accessories.

I'll second the opinion that your best bet is buying the whole car. I found a 1979 300SD for $1,100 and pulled the engine to put in my pickup truck.

That's probably some pretty good advice. Thanks guys.

I don't suppose either of you (or anyone else) could tell me if a fully rebuilt NA OM617 motor is worth anything, by chance? I don't think I'd be asking much, but it would be nice to recoup some of my costs if that were possible!

Thanks in advance,

Corey

Why do you think that? It's on the Minnesota Craigslist

I have a spare OM617 turbo in my driveway (under a tarp), but it's 800 miles from Edmonton (20 miles south of Seattle)...

Must be in WA State somewhere - but not in Seattle.

Seattle is in King County and the sales tax rate is 8.9% (highest city and county tax rates in the state).

I just saw a wrecked (Obvious t-bone) SD in the calgary pick-n-pull about 2 weeks ago, I knew I should have just grabbed the whole engine/tranny combo but had no vehicle to pick it up in.

Any idea what they might want for it or if it'd even still be there? Maybe I'll give them a call tomorrow...

Thanks for passing that along!

Corey

Heads up, pick-your-part pays up to $1000 for a pre-1981 vehicle as long as it meets their criteria which basically means passed smog, has been registered for the past 2 years, been registered to you for 90 days, drives forward and backward. So, my advice is find a W116 with a OM617.950, swap your motors and sell the w116 to pick-your-part. It's some work, but could be well worth it.

No reason to sell a rebuilt Non-turbo engine to the junk yard. It should be worth more than $1K alone.
