Question 1985 300D Turbo Fuel Range

Hey all, had a real quick question, did a search for and nothing I saw came up. I was wondering what the fuel range was on the 85 300D Turbo. Also if anyone knows the MPG both city and highway that'd be cool! Thanks again!

Range is about 450miles. Real world (not EPA) economy should be 23 city and 28 highway with an average of 26mpg for the Federal 1985 model. California version -2mpg.

Awesome, thanks forced!! I figured it had to be in the 400's somewhere. I do miss the 240 mileage though Also, why is it -2 mpg for California models?

Freakin California...

Ahhhhhh, lol ok. I actually have one more question forced if that's cool? The black canister, is there supposed to be an air filter in there? or no? I got the car from a mechanic and just for fun one day opened it up and noticed there was nothing in there. But wasn't sure if this was how it was supposed to be. thanks again!

Yeah, its the air filter box!

Some "mechanics" think an air filter isn't needed. They remove the filter thinking that will somehow improve performance.

For modern highways, 70-75, I usually see about 25MPG. City is about right at 23. I do have a heavy foot, though.

I don't like letting my tank get low, so I tend to fill up when the gauge gets just under the 1/4 mark, usually around 350 miles.

Unhappy

For a mix of city and highway driving my 85 300D California car has about a 300 mile range give or take. Its my second one and its running flawlessly. These cars are heavy on fuel...just my 2 cents!

Over 23,550 mostly city miles, my '85 300D-T (CA) has averaged 21.5 mpg on mostly B100 commercial biodiesel. This is all before the trap catalyst was replaced with a "test pipe." I haven't driven the car enough since the replacement to know whether there was an improvement or not (should be).

Highway mileage was usually 24 with one incidence of 26 when circumstances required me to drive no more than 60 mph for an entire tankful of D2 (petroleum-based diesel fuel). Current miles 232,000 on the original engine, EGR removed.

From the dealer the CA-version 1985 300D-T air filter is at least $75 but you can get it for about 2/3 by clicking on the 'buy parts' link at the top of the page and then "Fastlane." Not only saves you $$$ but supports this forum. Blow it out occasionally with compressed air and it will last for a year or two.

I just can't believe I was driving it for so long without it. I can't afford to get one right now, So all I can do is park it, go to the junkyard tomorrow and see if there is at least a semi-clean filter from the same car and use that until I can afford the 75.00 air filter :/

Is there a way to make this car an "unCalifornia car" emissions wise? I'm hopefully going to be relocating to Texas soon, although, not sure if Texas was one if the 11 western states with the trap oxidizer.. If it wasn't then i'd like to take the crap off. I WANT THAT 2MPG! lol

If your car hasn't had the trap oxidizer replaced, MB will replace it for free I believe.
