Is it me or my speedo???

So i just bought a instrument cluster for a W126 for $20 so i just swap the speedo with my original speed, so i took it for a spin, and surprisingly it works, OK, now for my problem, i took it at the high way and its reading 75 MPH and my rpm is sharp on 3000 rpm, Now my original one will read 75 rpm @ 3400 RPM, so which one is right???? The new one or the original one...My car is a 1984 300SD and the new instrument cluster says 1983 300SD written in chalk

I'm willing to bet the 83 differential is different than the 84 differential, which would explain the difference in RPM at 75mph. The speedo is probably different. Are all the numbers on the gauges in the same location? If not then they are definitely different.

next time you see a state trooper, speed up. He'll be more than willing to tell you how fast you were going.

seriously, drive by one of those police speed warnings that clock your speed. They are pretty accurate.

Even though the speedo said it was from an '83 300SD, It could have been replaced into the cluster with a speedo from a gasser. The Gas models had a different ring and pinion and the engine turned less RPM at a given speed that the diesel did. That's my guess.

The speedo maxes out @ 125 mph, and the entire cluster is from a 300SD, The rpm is the same, the temp oil and fuel gauge is the same and there is no fuel economy gauge... I ll post a video on the speedo tomorrow

Mercedes may have changed the final drive ratio in between 1983 and 1984. They did that in the 300D (W123) between 1984 and 1985. The purpose was to allow people to cruise at higher speed for the same engine RPM.
