a guy recently told me it was bad to use any type of fuel, injector cleaners etc on an 87 300SDL is this true?

Diesel Purge is generally safe. There's a lot more cases of it not helping than causing problems.

Nothing beats taking your injectors to a Bosch shop to be cleaned and tested for pop pressure and spray pattern.
