Alternator Froze while motor running/ smoked my belts.

Bolt loosened up I guess ,the ratteling of it hitting the fins on the alternator was very noticable ,popped the hood to check it and the fins were hitting what I thought was another piece of a bracket my mechanic was advising me on as he installed my new alternator. From their I was heading to the house, started it after jumping in and the worst happened ,the bolt that was making the noise came loose and stopped the alternator dead, bolt stopped the fins from spinning and smoking belts ensued with idiot lights going off on the dash ,cut the belts and drove it home .I usually take these projects on but gave the guy a chance to make some dough sence things were slow for him.Now Im out the labor ,belts ,alternator Im guessing and my time to redo what he f d up.Called and left the guy a message ,no call was the responce. Now my motor is getting hot ,like me.WHATS THE WORSE CAUSE TO THE MOTOR?

No harm to the engine.

Significant harm to the wallet.

If you're not positive of the capabilites of an indy with regard to knowledge of these specific vehicle.........then you've got to service them yourself.

^^ x 2.
Check around for a competent mechanic, or DIY.

I would give him the opportunity to fix it, or pay to have it done. How did you pay him? If it was with a credit card, contest the charges with you CC company.

If he is a Mechanic with a shop you have to give him a chance to warrant it or to refund you before you cancel any payments; or as you said fix it yourself.

not to hijack the thread but its on the topic of frozen stuff and belts.
The bearing in my idler pulley grenaded so the pulley froze and i had to cut the belt. (its the belt that runs the ac compressor) is there any harm that can be done running it without that belt. the A/C does not work so no loss there.

What year/model? Does your alternator belt(s) also drive the fan and water pump?

You won`t harm anything with the AC belt removed. the belt doesn`t drive anything else.

thanks thats what i thought but these cars rarely do what i think they should

Ok ,now I know the whole story. One of the assembly bolts wiggeled out of the alternator and got in way of the alternator fan ,not my mechanics fault. In some far off country is a nut laying on a table looking for its partner, the bolt.Assembly class should maybe try a little do dilagence on their assembly steps one more time.Oriellys guy at the counter had ask if the nut was still in the box and my reply was just a smile and a look.My reply should of been ,your about to have a nut on your hands.

Never ending saga ,the newly rebuilt alternator ,no worky,me beginning to loss faith in Orielleys ,whats the phrase ,3rd times a charm.I think Ill be a pro at alternators after this.
