I once went to look at an "all original" boss 302 mustang that had a tree growing out of the driver window. I drove 2.5 hours each way. I asked a lot of questions before the trip, but it never dawned on me to ask about flora and fauna.

tex, sorry to hear about it!

You learned you shoulda known to ask "is the car really yours and not belonging to your soon to be ex wife?" oh well. 20/20 hindsight, right?

what was this guy thinking trying to sell a car without a title! did he think you "might not" ask for it?

I got lucky on my Fleabay 300D purchase! The seller was Ciao and it was a smooth trouble free transaction. One of my best ever with Ebay.

i had a bad deal on an 88 300ce.was at a dealer.took it out for a test drive.loved it.turns out the dealer was selling it for another guy.well i give him a check for it and he says he will mail the title.well 3 weeks later i still didn't have the title.well i emailed the vin number to the state dmv,and they replied back that there was a lien on it.guy still owed like 3500 on it,i ws only giving 3000 for it.turns out the guy moved to florida.so when all was said and done i just took it back and got my money back.still i really liked that car.and wanted it so bad,but i guess in the long run i'm better off,i went and bought an sdl instead.

I'm pretty sure my worst experience was going to see an MG Midget... At night... And buying it... in the dark...

Yeah. What looked like a really solid body was in fact bondo and beer cans. Yes, I said beer cans - Budweiser cans, to be exact. I was suckered by bodyshop receipts from a well known shop in the area that was famous for excellent work. Trouble is, they were for a different Midget. I got a parts car with lipstick - Really, really, really thick lipstick!

So, uhm... Don't buy cars in the dark, either!

Condition can be subjective, ownership cannot.

I think we can all understand that terms like "good condition", "original", etc are subjective. A car that's in "good condition" to one person may be a "beater" to someone else. That kind of miscommunication is inevitable.

Whether or not an automobile has a clear title in the seller's name is not a subjective matter. I have had sellers claim to have a clear title to a car, only to discover that the title is not in their name, but in the name of the previous seller. That is not a clear title. That is an "open" title, and cannot be legally sold in most states. It is a crime to sell a vehicle with an open title in every state that I know of.

Rant over,

SteveM.

The last car I bought out of state was in Georgia. Before making the trip to pick it up, I spoke with the GA DMV, provided them with the VIN and asked if the car was legally titled and free of any liens.

If you have the VIN, it would be interesting to see if the MD DMV can provide you with any information. More than likely, they owe money on the car, and may not intend to pay it back.

Did you ask to speak with the wife?

Johnhef,

actually, i asked him if he had a "clear transferable title" to the car. - he said "Yes" & that he "would bring it with me (him)".
(i would think that that question/answer was adequate for an HONEST person - like i said, he's a "slickster", who was looking to "beat someone".)

Fitz,

actually MD DMV is "prohibited by law & regulation" from "disclosing such ownership data, as it "may involve" release of privacy-protected information".

FYI, MD is a SOCIALIST state & the RADICAL left is running things.
(as a retired LEO, i can tell you that the MD state government frequently does NOT cooperate with even out-of-state law enforcement agency inquiries. = we had a case some years ago where they refused to release the whereabouts of a person, who was wanted for forgery, due to "privacy concerns"!)

to all,

fwiw, to us "wild Texicans", "right PURDY" is HIGH praise indeed.

Marilyn Monroe was once described by (associate editior) Paul Krume in the Dallas Morning News as a "right handsome filly". = it's a "Texas thang; you wouldn't understand". = (chuckle)

As Luck would have it ,I was also an Illegitimate owner for a short while on a 300cd purchase. The things that youll need to be aware of is a name match from not only the seller but dealer. My problems was with a dealer ,not fun in the least. The paper work handed to me was expressed with the following" this is all youll need".When I arrived at the DMV it was a circus act of paper work.Power of Attorney form # xxxyyyzzz had to be sent to 3rd party owner, title named owner out of state .I found him through the internet and if he hadnt been ablidging I would have been stuck with a parts car.Name match on title with drivers license of seller ,period .Or your in for a headache of chasing down the titled owner.
