Third brake light w123 wagon

I took down the rear speaker/light cover and on the driver's side there is a small electrical bar. The third from the center connects to the brake light. The other wire connects to the top left on the driver's side brake light push on four plug. You have to remove the spare tire to see it. I found a third brake light in the yards and painted it to somewhat match my interior. BTW I have not washed the tailgate since I de-installed my muffler. Put on over 140 miles in mixed driving. Straight out the back does not seem to make the tail gate sooty as predicted by some.

The view from outside the car looks fine, but that thing looks hideous with the gate open.

Yeah the color does not match, and I don't like the mounting hardware. I've been nearly rear ended twice in the last few months so I had to get something there. New hardware and perhaps color change to black ought to make it less obvious.

maybe attach it to the door so it swings up and it will be out of the way and out of sight when the door is open

That's what I was thinking! My wagons both need a 3rd eye brake light on them and I want to somehow find a way to have it on the rear hatch and not the interior roof pillar. It looks very effective though and that is the point.

Ive toyed with temporary placement of a third brake light in my wagon as well. I'll be using the brake light strip from the trunk lid of a 129.

Wait, are you talking about the strip of terminals that the wiring for the hatch connects to? There's no brake light in the hatch. I wouldn't have thought there would be a brake light terminal there.

I have one of these in my wagon and just got another one for the '74, but haven't installed that one yet. Mine is tapped into the brake light wire behind the spare tire.

If you look close in this pic, you can see the light. Its glued to the inside of the window. I had to try a few different adhesives before one actually stuck, so the glue isn't too pretty, but its not terrible.

I don't have a pic of it lit up, but its bright.

I used the third brake light out of a mid-90's Subaru. It's low profile and you can't see any mounting hardware. The color is gray and black, so at least it's innocuous back there.

Is there a third brake light that works well on the 116?
I'd like to put one on the 78 SD.

Got pics? I bought an led strip from harbor freight to put in one of these days. It is probably not the brightest, but it would be betther than nothing. I think people are soooooo used to third brake lights to the point that they don't "look" for the other brake lights putting our cars in danger of getting rear ended.

I previously had a third light on the glass, but it's hard to find one that fits and sticks. The speaker cover seems too high for a direct attachment that does not hang down a bit. I had to get something there, and the price for this was right, and I had the time. I want a LED invisible when not lit strip that also flashes messages and has a running stock ticker and headline news.

Was there a way to fabricate a bracket to install atop the tailgate wiper "hump" as in the w124? The w124 had the 3rd brake light in that spot. Wiper obscures it partly but still highly visible.

Hmmm . . . never thought about putting it there.

I thought of that also but then you have to run wires down the side of the glass or inside the hatch, plus you have to stick it to the glass somehow.
