How many quarts of Oil???

I have a 1983 300D, just curious as to how many quarts of oil it will take when I do the oil change in the spring? And what parts/fluids do I need to do AT service at the same time?

INcorrect, it will take SEVEN quarts to bring it up to right around the max mark.

8 quarts = 1 quart too much....don't overfill!!

Transmission:

Transmission service requires a new pan gasket, and a new filter, plus 8 quarts of trans fluid, however, the trans only holds 7.2ish.....don't overfill that either. Put in 4, start it and let it idle a minute, then add 3 more, then check it and add a little as needed to get it to the right level. Thats the proper procedure.

A 5mm allen socket is helpful for removing the drain plugs on the torque converter and pan. To rotate the torque converter and get the little drain plug in the viewing window underneath, you will need to rotate the engine by hand. Either with a 27mm deep socket+ socket wrench on the crank pulley, or with a 22mm wrench on the power steering pump pulley nut. Turn CLOCKWISE only (when looking at the engine from the front of the car), never ever go backwards, not even a tiny bit, you can make the timing chain skip. Its handy to have a friend slowly rotate the engine until the drain plug comes into view, though it is possible to do by yourself (in very small increments.

perhaps it varies year to year, but my '85 Owner's Manual says 8.0L/8.5 US qt for total oil capacity in case of engine oil and filter change...and 7.3L/7.7US qt for transmission fluid capacity with 6.2L/6.6 US qt fluid change.

That's for the federal version...the california version uses a little less trans. fluid.

Here's another thought:

Considering the high mileage on the car (277K), and not knowing when the AT service was done last, I have heard horror stories of AT having all kinds of problems when someone does some PM on them and none has been done regularly in the past. Am I better off not doing it,( you knowthe if it ain't broke, don't fix it motto) or should it be done regardless?

7 qts, 7.5 qts, or 8 qts, wow. Just fill it till it runs out the valve cover.

NO seriously, don`t do that. I always use to dump in 8 qts when doing a oil change and filter. always hung around the full mark on the dip stick with the 8qts. I did notice it used oil since being a high milage engine so didn`t give it any thought.

Then I discovered MB Shop. I read I was doing it all wrong. Keep it 1/2 way between add and full is where it is to live. also saw a MB tech paper that mentioned it also.

Just don`t get side tracked as to how much you are adding when doing an oil change. I did that once.

Wife came out to talk to me while I was doing the change. Son in laws mom was coming down from Oregon to see the Monarch Butter flys here in Santa Cruz on their migration south for the winter.

I usually buy oil in one gallon bottles, and it takes two for a change.
well I picked up some in two gallon jugs (see where Iam going with this?)

So getting side tracked, I dumped in 4 gallons. so off we go down the hill to the Butter Flys. I notice the engine was acting strange and was smoking some, and not as peppy. By the time we get to the park we are smoking real good. Park the car and off we go, I for got the camera so run back to the car, and there is a puddle of oil under the front end. pull the dip stick, yeah we have plenty of oil, wonder why it is so high. OH crap, now I know I blew the engine.

We go for dinner and Iam stressing as to where Iam going to get the money for a new engine. Didn`t enjoy dinner out on the warf.

Well in the middle of the night, something woke me up. I sit up straight up in bed and it hit me, OH crap! I put in twice the oil.

So the next day I drain it and put back in the 8qts. seemed strange to be dumping dirty oil back in, but I did get a good flush.

Didn`t seem to do any damage, but I cringe what could have happened.

So, follow orders here from the experts, and you should do well.

Its simple. Fill the engine with 7qts, run it, let it sit for 10 minutes and top it up.

Wow, you were beyond lucky......it could have ran away, or foamed the oil and blew bearings.....the list goes on!

When mine was new, it took 7.5 quarts every oil change to bring it to the top mark.
I no longer do that. I add 6 quarts which brings it to the bottom mark and it will hold that level until the next oil change. If I put in more than 6, it soons leaks or otherwise looses oil down to the bottom mark and holds that level. I have a lot cleaner engine now using the 6 quart method.
