'87 300D - What to look for?

A friend of mine is interested in an '87 300D. The ad says "lots of new parts but runs and drives great". Are there any chronic problems with this particular model? What should he look for?

There are plenty of folks on this forum who know much more about this than I do, but ------- from what I've read, that particular series of engine (post '85) may have had a bit of trouble with the aluminum head and overheating. You could probably do a search and check this out. I do know that my '83 is a great vehicle. Beyond that, I only know what I read on this forum.

There is a long wiki on the W124/OM603 somewhere. I have a copy but don't know the link. Someone will come up with it. It's a great car, just don't overheat it and "try to make it home."

This is what Jeremy is referring to.

I would try to look at it in the morning. Ask the owner to let it sit over night. When you get there make sure the engine is cold and then squeeze the upper radiator hose. There shouldn't be any pressure present. If there is I would keep looking.

Just ask one of us after we've bumped a vacuum line loose while installing glow plugs or fuel filters or . . .
