I can make anything work, and im already making new motor mounts and a tranny mount, so im not to worried about pulling the motor forward as much as needed. the acctual space needed for the motor isn't much different between the 4 and 5cyl. the big thing is the oilfilter housing. on the 4 cyl it sticks way out the back, like a good 3" or more, where as on the 5cyl engine its flush with the back of the head. so the tranny is further back with the 5cyl, but thats not really an issue. being that the extra cylinder uses 3" of the dead space at the back of motor, the front is really only like another 2" forward over the 4cyl.

what are you thinking of swapping one into?

hey heres a question for all you turbo guys out there. being im not gonna have the over boost computer anymore in my engine swap, im wondering about the ALDA system. can i resonably just connect this strait to the intake manifold? what about putting it on a switch for economy, and power? do you guys see any problems from doing this? thanks again

I am near Victoria and 49th ave in Vancouver.

I have a 1963 Jeep FC170 with a OM617 turbo/with stock auto into a short drive shaft that goes to NP205 transfercase then regular drive shafts both directions.

I used the cross member from the Mercedes and stock motor mounts with a fabricated transmission cross member using the stock mount.

I saw your 4cylinder on craigslist.

Anyhow if you have questions: thedjjack@yahoo.ca

Here is my build: http://bb.bc4x4.com/showthread.php?t=123204

Cheers
David

thats pretty cool man! i'm still collecting parts, and debating on doing a manual with the motor i put in? might be getting a 5spd b2600i 2wd (same truck as the b2200 but with a beefier rearend and tranny) and maybe ill try to do an adapter for the motor to the mazda tranny? just need to find a flywheel for the 617 now anyone got one they'd part with?

ok so i've got the truck pretty much done stage 1 of this build, its running and driving with the mazda 5spd tranny, exhaust stack is all built and working good. this truck has taken some serious modification to get it where it is now and im pretty happy with it, i just wish i had more time with my shop to paint it a nice flat black and get a new bed for the truck too.

heres some videos i've taken during the build, and ill link some pics up too, and my photobucket account as well if anyone cares to look through my build process. the full build write up is also linked in my sig, over to www.mazdatruckin.com

Looks like a nice clean job you are doing there. I particularly like the exhaust.

Nice Job!

One question on the flywheel--Did you machine the "bell" off the MB flywheel and then drill and tap it so the mazda flywheel could be bolted directly to it? If so, how did you center the two and balance them?

i gave the machine shop the 2 flywheels and all the measurements. then i sat the engine on end and sat the tranny in the clutch and pilot bearing then used that as a reference for the adapter plate. i also had the shop just neutral balance the flywheel setup.

weight in front

might have to throw a few sandbags in the back of truck to keep it balanced . . . LOL. Good job . . . want to hear how it all turns out. Hop you can do it with a five speed tranny that works and I hope you can maintain the good mileage. Oh, btw . . . what year was the 300SD?
