82 240D Engine Removal (mount problem)
Hey guys. Been searching this forum for advice when it comes to removing my engine from my 82 240D. Your advice I've found in other threads has been great!
Now I have a problem of my own. I've been following the Haynes manual for engine removal and saved the front motor mount bolts as my last step. Well those stupid hex bolts stripped on me so now I'm stuck. Should I just drill the bolts out or actually remove the whole mount from the side of the motor? (while securing it to the hoist at the same time of course) On a side note, I'm pulling the motor because the body of my car is shot. The floorpans on both sides are rotted out. I had the car for sale locally in my area (still on craiglist) but couldn't get an offer higher than $200 so I plan to either put the motor in a body that's halfway decent and scrap the frame or part the entire car out and buy a whole "new" 240D or 300D. |

your only option is to drill the bolt out.

OK, sounds like you have done this..
Do you remember what size drill you used ? |

There are three bolts. Two holding the mount to the body and one on the underside holding the mount to the engine arm.
Remove the one on the under side. Don't forget to remove the center mount behind the lower oil pan. |

frame to engine mount bolts 240d
The bolts buried in the frame facing up are 10mm shank allen head bolts, probably hardened 10.10 steel. You may slide by with a 1/2" drill bit but if you've got to buy something 9/16" with a 1/2" shank would be more likely. Buy a cobalt coated us made bit the first time, 10.10 steel will dull a high speed bit fast. These are $40 at my local hardware store. Wear safety goggles, "visitor" glasses" have nicer side shields than the pro glasses they sell at home depot. Use a handle on the drill in case it grabs. Holding the drill with your left hand cuts wrist strain if the bit grabs. Don't be surprised if the drill bit breaks, it often does, lower speed makes that less likely. Cool bit with water spray occasionally.

If you do decide to do a transplant, I have an '82 300D on ebay right now, without an engine or tranny. Pretty solid but beautiful interior. Black and tan, south of Cleveland, Ohio. Check it out if you are interested! I think it ends on Saturday. Good luck with your bolts! George

actually my motor mount bolt broke off, it didn't strip out. all I had to do was replace the support arm and buy another bolt.

Drilled the bolts out successfully today and the motor and tranny are free! Now I need to get a load leveler. Theres no way its coming out without one.
George, thats the exact color combo i've been looking for! Ohio would be quite a trip for me but I'll check out your auction. I did find a 83 Euro spec 240D about an hour away from me that I may purchase. It has 91k original. 4 speed manual. Guy wants $2,000 for it. Only thing that scares me is he said some hack-job shop tried to put A/C in it and failed miserably so he bought the car. He put everything back together, has run it for a couple years and now wants to sell it. He never finished the A/C. I dont need A/C but was wondering if you guys think 2 grand is worth it? (I havent gone to look at the car just yet)
