How much is it worth?

Been dreaming about my next diesel and found a possible candidate. Not too much work needed to bring it back to 'purist' form but need a input as to how much I should offer.

Did you see the ebay link for it?

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=290293016760&ssPageName=ADME:L:LCA:MOTORS:1123

Depends on how long he's been running it and if he knew what he was doing. From the ad it seems that he's been using it for a while, and is fairly conscientious. Those under hood pictures show otherwise, though.

The horrible pictures just scream neglect, and the odometer is highly suspect. If he can document the mileage, and trace the ownership history, then perhaps its possible.

With the AC ripped out, body damage, and signs of neglect, I would only risk a couple of grand on the car if the mileage seems accurate.

Seeing a car like this, sitting out in the snow,
just makes me sick. I would have nightmares
about rust................

Take a trip down south, find a nice rust free
example and go from there

If they can get an honest $4500 start
bid on that, then it may be the right time
to put SLOWRIDE back up for sale..............

For $6k someone else would have a nice ride,
and I would have the money for an SD

"AC has been removed to reduce weight"
This is why I still see an AC line on the engine?

Suspiciously low mileage and priced too high for the condition.

But... But... But... It has pinkomino "leather" interior! Sure looks like MB-Tex to me... The real leather doesn't turn pink the same way.

I love how he states, "1 Rear window does not work, the worm gear is worn out. It's in up position." He then almost immediate states, "Aircond was removed to save weight. With the sunroof opened & the 4 windows down this car is cool." Really? Shouldn't that say 3 windows down? Hmm.

All of this is after he says, "
If a part was not working, it was replaced immediately." Right. Sure. Uh huh. Why are so many things being disclosed as broken if that is true?

I have to be honest - my BS sensors are tingling like mad! I'd steer clear of this one, because that "rust-free" car probably has rust somewhere. Who knows what else the seller is glossing over or just plain lying about.

To me it doesn't sound like he is hiding anything. It sounds as if he is embellishing his car and has an unrealistic expectation of the demand for a 'grease car'. Perhaps when gas and diesel get closer to $5/gallon again more people will be looking for one, but right now the demand for an already converted one is pretty much not there.

thanks for the input gentlemen.

I found another 300SD (1983) with 135k miles. The odometer looks straight (no tampering) and the car has no rust. Runs good but will need the usual maintenance items. The paint is original and good. The interior is in good condition but can use some cleaning. A/C and interior switches dont work.

no records either..
What should I offer? they are 'asking' $2300.
could this be my next diesel?

No records, electrical/CC problems?

Run a carfax, and offer them what you're comfortable with. A compression test wouldn't be a bad idea either. How's the blowby? If the paint body, and interior is as nice as you say it is, and the mileage matches the vin check, their asking price is reasonable. Keep in mind you could be spending 2k+ right out of the gate to get the car sorted out.
