Trouble Turning off my 709d
Hello,
I have a 709d van and i have trouble turning it off. Wehn i turn and take the key out of the ignition the engine continues as though idling. I have to stall it to stop it running and even this takes abit of trying before it stops. Any ideas of whats causing it and how to sort it out? Much appreciated! Chris |

It is probably either a bad diaphragm in the vacuum shut off valve, a leak in the vacuum system, or a failing vacuum pump. You could put a Mity Vac in line with your shut off valve and check the level of vacuum going to the shut off valve when the key is turned to off.
My educated guess is that there are no other vacuum devices on a 709d (my 307d and 409d's were like that) besides the shut off system, so tracing down the vacuum problem should be pretty easy.

I have some trouble turning off my 1980 300d at slow idle sometimes, even after replacing the injector & steering shut-off valves. Slightly press the accelerator to fast idle, then turn the key off. Seems to work fine for me. Hope this helps.

He's got a doghouse, not a hood. It's a pain in the neck to remove the doghouse far enough to get access to the stop lever. It'd be easier to put a plastic bag over the air intake than access the stop lever.

My mistake, sorry. Was just trying to think of anything that might be useful in the short term.

The 709d has the 364 type engine, 3972cc. It does have a dog house and no stop lever in that model i dont think. I guess covering the air intake is the best move as i wouldnt know where to start in checking the vacuum system...
Thanks for your help everybpdy! Chris |

I would be cautious in what I chose to cover the intake. A plastic bag would be sucked into the IM in a heartbeat. A board or piece of stiff plastic or metal might work – I say might – we need to hear from someone who has actually tried it.

It could be the case that the OM 364 has a mechanical or electrical shut off solenoid. In which case, it wouldn't be a vacuum problem. Look at your fuel system near the IP and see what kind of mechanism it has for shutting off the fuel. The OM364 was put in Toyota Land Cruisers built in Brazil, so perhaps someone on a Land Cruiser forum is familiar with the problem. We don't see many OM364's in the US.

Is this an A pump? The OM364 is similar to the 362/314?

I know on my OM314 shutoff is attained by moving the IP lever in the opposite direction of "GO", same as the MW pumps. Is the OM354 electronically controlled?
