manual transmission into 300D wagon

Ive heard of three possible routes:

* Getrag 265 from BMW
* 240D 4-speed
* Apparently ultra-rare 300D 5 -Speed

It seems that the 4spd is the easiest and cheapest route to go, but how are the manual gears compare to the auto counterpart?

I just dont my highway rpm's higher than they were in my 300d sedan....

final drive is 1-1 on 4spd manual or auto

BMW getrag has yet to be proven and developed, I have not heard if the bell that was planned was cost effective.

the 240D 5speed is doable and available if you dont mind paying shipping from europe or waiting for one to come up.

240D 4spd is the cheapest way to go. if you have a PNP close the parts will run you around 200-250. then you will need to get the driveshaft shortened at around 75-100. if you need clutch and pressure plate thats another 250-300, if the parts car has a good clutch chances are the PP is ok too. if you can do the install yourself then its about a 2 weekend job the first time, plus the time to get the DS shortened and the flywheels match balanced, which is an additional 25-50.

shortening ds for 75 to 100 sounds a little short to me. around 200 and up is more what I have seen and or experienced.

good to know, I was going by mine, it was $80 here is Tampa, but shops dont like the MB driveshafts so different areas probably have a big range of prices. they wouldnt balance mine as a set and told me to use hose clamps but mine was fine.

I have been pricing parts for this job.
Clutch disc, pressure plate, master cylinder, slave cylinder, pilot bearing, release bearing.

Fast Lane $539.44 All part express $429.45. add in fly wheel bolts 12 @ $4.95 ea $59.40.

Then add in the Drive line work $200.00 pluss. and balance the Fly wheel, I have see prices of $100.00 to do ea one.

Prices will vary around the country.

Could luck out and get a new PP and Clutch disc at PNP like GAVIN LESLIE did when he did his 79 300CD.

also add in the trans, peddles, shifter, shift rods, 240D front drive shaft, 240D automatic trans X mount. and what ever I forgot here to add.

So a healthy $1000.00 to do the job.

Charlie

4-speed swaps are common. If you use the junkyard to source most of the hardware it can be done over a long weekend for around a grand.

Finding a cheap 240D parts car would be an even better alternative to picking individual parts. They be bought for around $600, much less if it has body rust. When you're done you can sell leftover parts on eBay and the body shell to the scrappers.
