your brake booster will need to be removed. You may be able to do this without removing the master cylinder from it.
There are 2 mounts for the bar that are attached at the firewall, one under the battery tray and the other previously mentioned. The ends of the bar attach to the upper control arm and are known to rust and fail. There are no surprises for this job, pretty much slides in and out. |

I used ratchet straps from the bumper mounts back to the upper control arms to pull them fwd enough to finish the install.
there are a lot of parts that need to be removed., but I did it in a day, no problem(w123) if the end rusted off, there are options aside from replacement. there is a kit on the market now, and also it is possible to weld on a new stud.

I read about that kit just a few days ago and decided to myself that it was the only way to go if the ends are the problem. Cheaper than a new bar, no annoying double duty of pulling the part twice if pulling from a donor car, and also avoids the problem of a salvage yard part which may also be ready to give out in the near future. What genius came up with this kit, I do not know, but they deserve a medal.

*Giggles* I don't think I will ever tire of this... However, I think we need more images for the sake of variety.

What exactly warrants replacement of this item? Worn bushings? Or something else.

X2, more and bigger. I'm not getting any younger and everyone seems to be using a smaller font size than they did a couple years ago.

The bushings can be renewed. The real problem is that sometimes the end of the bar snaps off. I think the common belief is that they rust off, but from the photos I have seen, I think it's actually a problem with the metal getting stressed and failing.

In my experience, the ends rust, becoming thinner and weaker and then snap off. I repaired mine by drilling, tapping, installing a larger stainless steel bolt etc. Pain in the butt, but at least easier than replacing the whole bar. The repair kit makes a repair stronger than the origional.

the repair kit is only cheeper than a new bar if you do one side. if one side failed, the other cannot be too far behind. however- when mine failed, after I decided not to weld or drill and tap, but to replace, upon removal of the bar, I noticed that the other side had been repaired by welding on a new stud. I do not know how long it was on there- but at least a year(12-15K), prolly more.
Word- it seems the kit is made for sedans, and the wagon has a 2mm larger diameter bar, so some modding may be necessary.

I have to rely on another forum member to create my images for me. Usually I send him a pic and he makes magic out of it. I try not to overstep my bounds with them, though.....
