New member hello, with questions.

Hello all,

Great forum! My wife and I just bought a 84 300SD.

I have a diesel Toyota Land Cruiser so not new to slow yet bullet proof diesel engines. But this is our first Mercedes(I have a feeling it won't be our last).

The car has 190,000 miles, seems to run just fine after it gets warm.

I'm looking for any thoughts you all might have for where to start with minor general repair.

Also a couple of random questions:

Replacement seat options? Drivers seat is shot.
Any need for a tranny cooler on these cars?
Inter cooler for the turbo?
I would like to improve the ride a bit, kind of squishy. Will new shocks do wonders or should I budget for new springs as well?

Well that is enough for now.

Once again great forum, I am a member of one for my Toyota and it has saved me TONS of money and get great ideas there.

Tim

Hi and Welcome!

Replacement seat options? Drivers seat is shot. Yes go to a pick and pull or if it just needs a new cover phil from fastlane can hook you up. Or you can get a hold of one of the members in the parts feature here in the forums.
Any need for a tranny cooler on these cars? To the best of my knowledge no just change all your fluid regularly.
Inter cooler for the turbo? Will do you no good unless you increase fuel. And the turbos on these cars usually last the life of the car.
I would like to improve the ride a bit, kind of squishy. Will new shocks do wonders or should I budget for new springs as well? Shocks helped me a ton!

Things to plan for right away is a valve adjustment and diesel purge and transfluid change. Unless they have been done right before you bought it. Use the search function its a great tool to have. Good luck.

You mean an additional cooler, other than the one already in the radiator? Unless you're towing, probably not.

Hi, welcome!

For the seat, do a search for "pool noodle". I kid you not...

I bought front seats from a '91 560SEL. Much better in my opinion.

yeah. any of the MB seats on newer 126 cars (SDL, SEL, SEC etc...) are a drop in fit, and waaaay better than putting in a temporary fix like a pool noodle...

holy moley! THAT"S a cooler!!!
I would think that would take a LOOOOOONG time to properly warm up a transmission though... the radiator tranny cooler also aids warming up the transmission!

Unless you're hauling trailers up the mountains, a cooler 1/4 that size would be more than enough!

Geez, I thought the people on my Toyota forum were fanatic(in a good way)

Thanks for all the tips....

I was expecting the valve adj, and fluid flush

I love the idea of newer seats.

I didn't expect i needed a separate tranny cooler just thought I would check.
ditto for the inter cooler.

Keep them coming if there is anything else glaring.

Tim

Just thought of the other main question I had.

Anyone in the Asheville, NC area have a good mechanic to recommend?

Thanks in advance.

Hi and welcome to the obsession! First thing to do is to join the Mercedes Club of America (MBCA.org) and your local chapter. Once you join youwill find lots of people who share the passion for these cars. They run tech sessions that will help you learn about the car's systems.

You should also look over the DIY sections on this site as well as use the advanced search feature on the site to answer any questions you have. This site has lots of great information.

Here is the link to North Carolina shops. Maybe that will help. Good luck and welcome.
