W210 Muffler Question

Hello all,

I have a 99 E300 Turbodiesel. I just noticed that my muffler is making a popping noise. I thought there was a hole in the muffler, but when I jacked the car up to look, I didn't a hole. The muffler looks almost new, no rust or anything.
My brother has the same car and his only has 50K miles on it. I had him start his car and I can hear the popping sound coming from his muffler also. I jacked his car up and looked at the muffler and it was the same as mine. Looks almost new.

Anyone else experiencing this problem?

Is this popping sound coming from the muffler normal? Could it be that something inside the muffler is broken?

Thanks

I notice no particular noise coming from my exhaust. Just normal noise slightly dampend by the turbo.

I have a recent set of muffler (3 yrs ago) that came directly from the dealer (previous owner).

Bye

Are you certain that what you are hearing isn't just the diesel "clatter" which is typical? To people used to gas engines this can be mistakenly thought to be a fault.

Thanks for the replies, but I'm pretty sure the noise is not diesel clatter. My car is pretty quiet for a diesel and this is coming from the rear. I can clearly hear it coming from the muffler when I jacked it up to look at it.

It's like a puttering sound. To me, it sounds like the resonater or something inside the muffler has been broken.

I'm hesitant to change the muffler because I looked at my brothers car and his sounded the same and his car only has 50K miles on it.

I was just wondering if anyone else had this problem or if both of our mufflers need to be replaced.

Did you check the top of the muffler and the tailpipe connections. I had a slight leak on the connection to the tailpipe, it was on top of the pipe.

Are all the rubber hangers in good condition? IIRC, there's one back by the tail pipe and another connected to a bracket at the trans.

I just went through my second exhaust system - from the big catalytic converter drum to the tail pipe. Check the bends in the piping. Mine blew holes in the bends long before anything looked other than brand new on the muffler itself. My first replacement was from the dealer. Big bucks.

The new one I have now is from TimeValve. Much better quality stainless steel, and I had them make the pipe slightly larger diameter tubing. Makes a nasty rasp when I really press the throttle down hard - but it is leak free and carries a true "lifetime" warranty.
